Agreed! I’ve got a little lad on the way soon and I would be gutted if he turned out to be a mag. We’ve been a Sunderland supporting family for 40 years since we moved up here and I’ll be doing everything I can to make sure it stays that way!

This has and will always happen, back when I was a bairn I was a big stevie G fan and asked for the latest Liverpool top every Christmas. There's always going to be kids who like the top 4 clubs but that doesn't take away any support we have for Sunderland. I still had season tickets for a decade

Growing up was always like that
As far as I can remember, there were 2 Sunderland fans in my class in primary school (and maybe one mag but I'm not sure). The rest were mostly Liverpool fans, and then as Man Utd started winning things, some of them switched.

Spent force doesn't mean what you think it does, it would describe us more than it would the mags.

I think if Newcastle stay up its going be sold out every game from here on

So Newcastle don't actually need any more fans than they've got right now...

I grew up in Chester-le-street area where it's roughly 50-50. ...In that middle ground type area kids will gravitate to the club that's winning . ( Just as when I was a kid ( long time ) 4 or 5 kids in my class were Leeds , Liverpool or Man u fans .)

But generally kids from. Sunderland / SE Durham area will still support Sunderland imo, not Newcastle
 
I remember playing them in our ramshackle Roker Park in Sept 96. They'd just bought Shearer for a world record fee.... we knew we'd struggle in the PL with Reidy's over achievers.

I thought the chasm between us would grow and grow and we'd be the over-shadowed neighbours for all eternity thereafter.

It didn't happen. They f***ed up big style and we improved hugely. Fast forward a few years and we're in the PL looking like a well run club, and they're going down and imploding.

I know many things are different now but history has taught us it's a cyclical thing between our two clubs and I hope to god that it does so again.

Yes its happend once before i lost good mates not spoken since its on the cards again money talks . But they arnt sland supporters in hearts they cant be so let them go . We will be back and they know it its on the pitch that counts and we are top dogs however low wev stooped they hate derbys .

I guess it can depend on the level of interest football has in the household and family. Obviously most posters here are dyed in the wool and would do anything to make sure their kids are Sunderland too. That’s not the case everywhere though. My parents don’t like football, rugby is my Dad’s sport. I didn’t start getting into it until I was at school, it was a friends dad who took me to my first game at Roker Park. It’ll be kids like that who would be easier swayed to support others.

It was inevitable if they do well. this will just accelerate the process.
