Could we lose a generation of supporters to the Mags?

Let me tell you..I've supported safc since 1977..my 13 year old lad is SC holder..he absolutely loves them..we travel home and away together..well if it's a crime to pass on your passion to your Son/ daughter...I'm guilty as charged!!
I’m actually agreeing -I have 3 at the ground in differing areas -we have all stands covered between us-no way would they support anyone else
Those saying there’s no kids going from co Durham -what are the parents who went in the 70s 80s 90 s playing at ?

The next 5 years will be a huge period of transformation for both clubs.

As things stand:

1) Newcastle are a club that appear to be on the rise. If they manage to stay up this season (which is now looking likely) they will be a spent force, throwing endless amounts of money at the hope of silverware. They will sadly become a big player in English football if the barbaric Saudis have their way. I can't see how this plays out badly for them; they have an endless pot of cash.

2) Sunderland are a club on the decline. We are breaking new records for all the wrong reasons, and reaching new 'lows' as the weeks go by. It looks like we will spend another season in the third tier, with most of our better players surely departing for pastures of new. Right now we find ourselves in a pretty precarious situation, and I don't see where it ends. The worst could be yet to come!

The sad and disconcerting point to consider is this - over the next 5 years or so do we risk losing a generation of younger fans to the Mags? Unfortunately I would say this is a real possibility.
but when we finally rise from the ashes it will be glorious.

My apologies..it was never meant as a dig mate..as to your post..I totally agree with you..its the sign of the times sadly..I'm born and bred Sunderland..so supporting any one else was never an option..or would I want to be aswell.

5 years premier league top 6 v league 2 sustainable. Eeeh yes. To clarify, I still wouldn't want them in charge of us

the takeover of NUFC by the Saudi Arabian state has seen to that; irrespective of what SAFC does.

I remember at St Aidans Sunderland in the 90s there were a few Mackems who started supporting them like. The attention seeking types. Seen one of them a few years later at the SOL (one of the 7th place seasons) and he was wearing his safc top.

We’ve had a disastrous couple of weeks but only a fortnight since a near 40k gate. I can’t even imagine why kids of Sunderland parents would want to support the Mags with alL the history. Football is not about the plastic Sky Premier League, it’s about the passion of your roots. It’s a free world but I’d be astonished if my Kids went for another team and 100% certain it would not be the Mags. Let’s see where we are at the end of the season. KTF and FTM.

Probably looking at a situation where it’s league 1 till I die now following on from years of mismanagement with overpaid owners, overpaid players, ever decreasing standards at the ground and a realisation we probably won’t compete in the championship. The transport infrastructure doesn’t help. It’s easier to get home from Leeds by train than it is to get to Durham after a match.

Just ask them where they are from and then tell them to piss off. Job done.

Thats a given. It's amazing how many plastic Mags I've met working all over the UK who have zero family or connections to the North East. They all say they started supporting them in the 90s under Keegan. It'll be a million times worse if they become successful. So far though their board seems a bit clueless so it could still be well over a decade until they're challenging for anything.

That’s very true re transport
I’m not giving up now and the “ kids” -they are up now really -are going through what we all have over the years
They go now without me “ badgering them “ make their own way with mates and we talk about it when we get together -job done .
I’ll support whoever comes in -to be fair to whoever it is -they have got probably the biggest challenge ever knowing a majority I would say are looking for the first slip up to pounce -the owners are to blame for that -I really hope whoever comes in is thick skinned and can turn this around -If he does he will have done a remarkable job under the circumstances
A few good results and people will be back on board -bad ones and I dred to think

and I will be at Wimbledon on Saturday

We could lose a generation of supporters to DIY and going shopping with the missus. It's probably a different generation to the one that the OP was thinking about but it's still lost.

Ere man you can all fuck right off my son is 6 years old so he’s never known the premier league and he wants to watch most games. I sent him to bed at half time during the Cheltenham game and his first words when he woke up was did Sunderland win. We don’t live in Sunderland either. Do your job as a parent right rather than being defeated blurts waving the white flag.

Dad can I have a PSG top with Messi on? No you f***ing can’t.

Is the right answer!

We are doomed to be a small club for the next 40 years at least unless we make some miraculous return to the top flight in the next 5 or 6.

All the kids will grow up supporting Newcastle who will by then be a regular top 6 side. Why would they choose to watch us?

I never get this? Surely if your parents are Sunderland fans then you will be?
What if your parents don’t like football that much but you do? This is a fairly small % of population but even if it’s 10% to lose 10% is a lot. Eg my mate Mark in Shiney Row whose parents weren’t arsed in the least but he went with Sunderland cos it was closest. In the future the Marks of this world will be Newcastle.

If you’re from Shiney Row and support the mags you need a slap
