I think this needs to be addressed. The thinking that he is a dinosaur, a hothead, a loose canon, is predominantly based on his playing days, and yes, back then, was probably correct.
He is 50 years old now, and has matured, both in his outlook, and his tactical ability and knowledge of the game.
People change with age. I joined the forces because if I hadn't I would probably have done time. Even in the Navy, I was permanently in the shit. Ffs, I hoyed a taxi driver into the water in Plymouth dockyard once, because he had no change for a tenner.
I am happy with my garden and my dog now. Mellow (ish)
He is the right man, at the right time, not the hand grenade he once was.
Saying it, and doing it are 2 different things mate.He openly said he would have decked De Gea after his performance in a game last year.
Kind of negates your point
You're taking that 100% at face value and completely missing that he could a) have meant when he was a player in the dressing room b) be playing up to his media persona c) being deliberately provacativeHe openly said he would have decked De Gea after his performance in a game last year.

I don't think we need a tactician as much as we need a clear leader to motivate them and stop their heads from dropping so easily.i agree with your point that people can change; i had no problem with Keane when he was here before.
but i'm not sure what evidence there is out there to suggest he has matured in his tactical ability and knowledge of the game. a brief synopsis of his time with ireland suggests he was never too far away from controversy or a media circus. he hasn't managed at club level for 10 years.
i'm not saying he would be a bad appointment, but i'm not sure he such a perfect fit for us at the moment as people are making out
i think we have a very good squad, we need a tactician to get them playing in the most effective shape
Man paid to be controversial in saying something controversial shock. He openly said he would have decked De Gea after his performance in a game last year.

Keane did punch Shearer tbf, but wouldn't we allSaying it, and doing it are 2 different things mate.
I know loads that talk a good fight, but when it comes to the push, they never throw a punch.
Aye.Is it still a done deal?
How do you know?Aye.
No, the talk was all about Celtic and the grief that the Leicester boss has has been getting lately.Didn't mention anything about Sunderland did they? Unless I tuned in too late. Would imagine if he was even interviewed it would have come up.
Alternatively; He was referencing what he would have done as Captain of Manchester United and not what he would really do now. Astonishing how people today are programmed to take everything literally. He openly said he would have decked De Gea after his performance in a game last year.
Kind of negates your point
I don't think that anybody is under any illusions about the very high risk of employing Keane.i agree with your point that people can change; i had no problem with Keane when he was here before.

We definitely need a tactician and a motivatorYou're taking that 100% at face value and completely missing that he could a) have meant when he was a player in the dressing room b) be playing up to his media persona c) being deliberately provacative
I'm not expecting him to come in and start swinging for Hoffman in reality
I don't think we need a tactician as much as we need a clear leader to motivate them and stop their heads from dropping so easily.
Apparently there are two issues and money is not an issue. The main one seems to be around what a longer contract means in terms of where Keane will Live. The current regime have stated quite explicitly to existing and potential players that if you are a Sunderland player you must buy into the club and move lock stock and barrel into the area. This was a bone of contention with Grigg and one transfer fell through in the summer as a transfer target wanted to commute from a distance. KLD and KS have tried to model this approach. KLD was at Cheltenham - he’ll be at Eppleton a few days later - he‘s always around the club - rather than Monaco! Short was more remote and it led to problems. The management team have made a big point of this principle within the club and feel a head coach who lives in the NW would dilute this approach and cause unrest in the playing group.
Keane is settled in the NW and wants a long contract - 3 years plus - before he would consider moving to NE. This was the position on Monday - not sure how it has progressed. Negotiations will hopefully lead to a workable compromise.
No idea. What a saga this has become.
Do you think they'll do a Season 2?
He should have had a short list of replacements ready to go as soon as a decision was made to sack LJ.Although it's seems to have a horrendous affect on the last 2 games is 10 days really an extremely long time to sack a manager and bring a replacement in. To me that's not the problem, the problem was the fact Speakman had not one person in a position to take the first team for 2 games , if its true what is being said that Keane agreed on Friday and the hold up has been trying to reach an agreement with Nottingham forest to release Reid, then I don't think they have done that much wrong in that situation.
What has happened in the days in-between are questions that Speakman should be forced to answer
