He was capable of the sublime now and then, but would do the basics badly. Drove me nuts.

His set pieces were mostly very poor as well. Loopy balls with no real pace on them... bread and butter for a half decent keeper. Of course it's the West Ham free kick people remember, but that was very much the exception.

West Ham free kick, West Ham volley, performance away at Norwich, debut pass for Murphy, seem to remember a game where he and Richardson played in centre midfield together and we looked miles better than we had previously with the likes of Whitehead and Etuhu (think Richardson might have scored two that game actually).

It’s easy to remember the highlights I suppose but I always liked him. Fitness obviously a problem but he was a good signing.
