Speakman

I think some of our fans seem completely out of touch with modern football.

We're a year into a strategy where I believe our recruitment process has been better than I can remember for years. Now you want to rip that up as we have hit a bump in the road back to the way we have tried and failed for years and what ultimately has led us down to League 1 in the first place.

I understand the importance of getting out of this league as soon as possible but we will just end up in the same position if we just start scrapping things entirely as soon as there's a few issues.

As for the comment of "No sideways or backwards passing" ffs man.
Strategies etc. are all well and good, but teams without apparent strategies manage to turn things around quicker than us, four years in this division when teams like Blackpool start seasons with virtually no players and somehow manage to get in enough journeymen and coach them to promotion. At some times the 'strategy' needs to be suspended for simple pragmatism and short term results, because the long term goal is no nearer until short term goals are achieved on the way there.

Something like that anyway.

Not sure I have faith in him tbh. Decent coaches have been replaced with lesser ones, no 16s coach atm, no 23s either, club hasn't got a spots scientist just to name a few of the problems.

That irritating word 'philosophy' and the bullshit that football has moved on.
It's a simple game complicated by involvement from those that think they are some sort of iconic guru reinventing what is and always will be a simple game of football.
This.

Amazes me how complicated people try to make the game these days.

In all my years watching football, personally the philosophy has been simple, especially in division 3 and 2. Have a blend of youth and experience, make sure the spine of the team is strong and experienced and hang youth, talent and rawness as needed around it. Get players for positions they work in (what the fuck is it all about playing players everywhere but their own position?) with instructions that are simple for what their position and job is in the team and keep it bloody simple.

The players we got rid of are now about to be promoted while we’re unlikely to make the playoffs.

Aye keep drinking the Kool-Aid. Speakman will probably give you a job.

If Keane joins 99% on here will all of a sudden think Speakman is a canny bloke. One of us bla bla bla
maybe. maybe not. can also see a scenario where if Keane is appointed then one of the main things that will be assessed at the end of the season is the relationship with Speakman, and one or the other leaves.

I wouldn't be surprised if the loss of form is down to Speakman and the players being told who's getting a contract at the end of the season and who's not. A bit speculative but it's an open secret now that Gooch is finished at safc.

I know he's not everyone's cup of tea but I'm still shocked by the Flanagan situation - the sudden loss of form, a move that looks very poor on paper, the assertion that he needed to secure his long term future, the lack of replacement etc.

I can only deduce that something has soured very quickly. Some won't agree but Flanagan had every chance of being at the club in the championship next year.

The only player starting yesterday who is out of contract was Gooch though. Hoffman as well, but his situation is different I suppose.

On the flipside, Neil and Embleton, who have both recently been given new contracts, were two of the worst players on the pitch. You could make as good an argument that everyone knows they have at least another year and are getting complacent.

Agree that the Flanagan situation is weird.

Exactly. Like Clough and Paisley.

I see it differently to many of the comments on here. Traditionally Sunderland have flip flopped about. We tried Congleton, we tried Di Fanti, we played a certain style with Poyet and then different with Allardyce etc. All the time we were racking up debts that could have destroyed us. We were taken over by Donald and Methven who proved to be totally unsuitable and sold off a boatload of young talent for buttons. Finally we seem to have an owner who wants to build us back up. The DOF system makes lots of sense to give us solid foundations. The recruitment has been good and we have got a load of young talent in along with some experience. I feel the appointment of Johnson was done in haste as they had just got in control and needed someone in place. Any analysis of Johnson's career would suggest he's not going to get us promoted. We need some in place quickly to get the season back on track and we can still get promoted.

On this board there seems to be an opinion that we should get rid of Speakman, get rid of the DOF system and go back to the old 'tried and tested' traditional stop/go of getting a new manager in, spend money in the summer for a new squad and rinse and repeat. For me we have to stick with the principles that our young owner came in and hold our nerve. They have been in charge just over a year and yet people want them to rip up everything they have put in place and all their ideas etc.
I'm pretty split on this. Fully agree that a data led approach with a DOF is the way to go in the long run however any system is only as good as the people who are in charge of implementing it and from what Keane said in that interview he did with Gary Neville in the summer I can't see him tolerating Speakman at all or working under any Director of Football for that matter.

That wouldn't be too much of an issue in itself if it wasn't for the fact that KLD has massively backed himself and the club into a corner re Keane by liking those posts on Instagram, which sent the fanbase into a frenzy. As an outsider looking in it does seem to be a case that we either persist with Speakman and appoint someone else as manager, which would go down like a lead balloon at this stage, or we bring Keane in and completely dismantle the structure we've apparently put in place. Neither scenario reflects well on the owner and the handling of this whole fiasco has been an absolute mess regardless of what the end result turns out to be.

Think there are massive question marks about the recruitment as well. We're overloaded with attacking midfielders, the only fit right-back we currently have in the senior squad is a lad who Johnson clearly felt was nowhere near ready to be starting games for us, our only left-back is a 19 year old kid who is horrible out of form at the minute and Batth currently looks to be a downgrade on Flanagan based on what we've seen so far.

Yes stick with these principles but is he the right man for the job. He is in charge of the setup but after coach and 1 of his side kicks leaves, the only person available to take charge is probably a person on the lowest rung of coaching levels. Did these watch any previous games and if so the new lads must be crap in training to only get on bench.

Well, after Keano's second "no comment" today on TV at the dippers and another cheeky wee smile, anyone think it is not going to be Roy?
