Young players thrived at Man United when he was captain. Young players thrived at Sunderland when he was manager. Did he not also take Colback on loan at Ipswich? The circumstances are vastly different from 2007. I have no anecdotal evidence to suggest he's especially good or otherwise in how he's handled the younger end in his various coaching roles but the SAFC examples - Leadbitter, Henderson, Waghorn - are (as you've suggested) positive.
My concern is based upon his personality type and the general youthfulness (and lack of first team experience) of our overall squad. The general consensus of people involved with RK is that he does get frustrated when other players are not able to achieve the heights of performance that he prided himself upon. Apply that mindset to younger players and it's not difficult to worry that some types might quickly shrink under his tutelage.
When we were hunting for Ross / Parkinson's replacement he was very much at the top of my wanted list. It will be a different set of skills needed with the squad we have now. He MAY have the acumen to bring the best out of them but I remain (sorry) unconvinced at the moment.

Not sure of the makeup of the Ireland squad but I'm sure he'll have worked with younger players there too.
I don't think it's worth worrying about. Better that the young lads learn from the best, than some jumped up little tit who only captained his daddy's team in the Championship.
