I'm not making a value judgement about whether I know or do not know any Neil Young or Joni Mitchell songs, just saying that I suspect my generation and younger don't really see the pair of them in perhaps the same light others do.

FWIW The Beatles are by far my most played artist of all time, so I've got nothing against music that was popular in the 60s or owt.

Is that a lot though, relative to the number of Spotify streams? I'm not trying to be argumentative I just don't think he's anywhere near a big enough artist to start a movement of other artists leaving the platform. For your sake I hope he comes back.

(You can however just download his material and load it into Spotify as a local file, and if your phone and computer are on the same wi-fi network you can sync his songs onto your phone and play them just as you would any regular Spotify song).

The way I'm looking at it isn't so much whether one artist is more or less popular than another...more that it's a PR disaster for Spotify.
 
Ultimately it'll be better for music in the long term if these subscriber service completely burn to the ground so I'm all for this.

Prob not as good for fans as having everything for a tenner a month is a great price but it's come at a massive cost of music hitting a low in terms of building new mainstream bands. Also might out ticketing costs back to a reasonable price if they could make money from recording again.

Is it a PR disaster for Spotify?

I imagine a large chunk of their customers are delighted that they have not binned Rogan after being pressured in to doing so.

It hasn't really harmed my perception of Spotify, and I've been a Spotify premium subscriber for something like seven years. I wish they didn't have Joe Rogan at all, but since Neil Young and Joni Mitchell don't carry any cultural weight for me, it doesn't really affect my personal view of Spotify.

I entirely appreciate that for people who do hold those artists in high regard, it would affect their personal view, but I have to ask - do Spotify's core demographic actually care about either of those artists?

Not being flippant, not wanting to seem like I'm dissing anyone's choice of music...I just don't think that millennials, zoomers or whatever the fuck people who listen to Post Malone are called, care about Neil Young or Joni Mitchell.

Rogan, Mitchell and Young won’t even be on millions of subscribers radars.

No real damage in my opinion.

believe me, it's a PR disaster to have esteemed artists leaving it and papers writing articles about it. They won't want The Beatles or Dylan leaving. They treat the artists pretty badly in the first place I'd imagine plenty will be happy to put the boot in. Taylor Swift for one.

I doubt it will have much impact tbh. The average age of a Spotify user is around mid 20s. There will be very few who listen to Neil or Jodi, most won’t know who they are. However it’s much more likely they will know Rogan.

I also think that there will be a large chunk of the public who will be pleased that a company is not giving in to the demands of a multi millionaire in regards to removing another person from a platform. A lot of people extremely dislike that type of behaviour.

It'll have an effect. It's not just 50 something duffers like me who listen to Neil Young. Also if you are trying to sell a comprehensive music streaming service and you lose some of the biggest recording stars from your library it will hit subscriptions and I doubt they have much leeway regarding that number.
It's already got me questioning the reliability of a music streaming service and I've been a subscriber for years. And once that ball starts rolling it could bring the house down quickly
I don't blame Spotify or want Joe Rogan taken down, but its shown me the flaws in the Spotify model that I hadn't been aware of previously and that could effect their business.

I don’t, I know people that have asked others not to come to parties etc because someone else doesn’t want them there.

I’d tell them to not bother coming themselves, that’s just me, I wouldn’t bow down their demands, if it’s me organising something it’s up to me who comes not them.
