The SMB Book thread

Broken - Don Winslow 8/10
Further up this thread, I've expressed my disappointment at Don Winslow's most recent offerings. Overblown, cliched and trying to make political points that have been made a hundred times before.
Broken is a return to what he is best at. Punchy, fast paced thrillers. A collection of seven novellas with characters and settings fans will be familiar with. Only the last of the seven is a bit of a letdown and it's no surprise that it's when he seemed to be making a political point.
The other six, whilst probably the bits from the cutting room floor of his other novels, all work well and keep you turning the page.

Burying Reggie - Alan Parkinson 12/10
I might just about get away with this as it's a book thread. ;)
When an easy-going lorry driver uncovers a dead friend’s secret, he has to decide whether to bury it before it buries him.
Been a bit of a slog getting this over the finish line (it's taken three years) but early feedback suggests it's my best yet.
Available on Kindle and in paperback and hardback.

Very thoughtful and enjoyable book. At the very least everyone who finishes it should come out looking at a complex situation from a different point of view. The author is great on emphasising empathy writing from personal experience working in humanitarian causes.

CJ Tudor . "The other people " . Involved suspense novel .
She's from Nottingham but loads of the references in experience are well observed and relatable to all " northern " life .
All her stuff is good .

Reading the S Thomas Russell "Thermis series", these books are historical fiction about HMS Themis, a Royal Navy frigate, at the time of the French Revolution under the command of Charles Hayden
A sort Sharpe series on the sea. Only Hayden is to much of a gentlemen to shag anything in a petticoat

Unnatural Causes: The Life and Many Deaths of Britain's Top Forensic Pathologist Richard Shepherd.

A mix of pretty interesting anecdotes from his working life and pretty dull/sad from his personal life. He seemed to be in a loveless marriage for pretty much the entirety, he almost comes across as robotic with his emotions. Perhaps that's something that comes with the job to a degree.

Some of the cases were either before my time or I just wasn't aware of them, I'm sure it'll add something more for those people who lived through it.

If anyone is into reading science fiction thrillers, I am currently running a free Ebook promotion on Amazon for my book - Double Jeopardy. If you would like a free kindle copy click on the link below. Promotion finishes tomorrow.

Could go down like a lead balloon on here or be parsnipped by a Mod, but worth a go, maybe we can share recommendations and highlights from our favourite reads.

I'm just starting to read Modern man in search of a soul by Carl Jung and I'll move onto a Champ Man 97/98 book afterwards as a decompressor, sometimes you need a bit of light reading after you taken in something heavy.

I'm curious to know what you're reading so share your latest book in here.

Read the Bob Mortimer autobiography and Eddie Hearn: 12 Rounds to Success (which was inadvertently pretty comical) last week. Got about halfway through Shoedog (Nike founder Phil Knight’s memoir) over the weekend - that’s been the pick of the three so far.

I'm mainly reading this thread.;)

It did do a search but didn't see that, happy to merge @mods
