Could you not have hoyed this in one of the other threads? You've hardly been over this sub section for weeks, then a sniff of bad news and you are back all over it. I'll whisper this quietly but its like you are thriving in the sudden down beat tone

I’m obviously missing something but how is “masks work” bad news, surely it’s excellent news

Did I say it was bad news? There are threads on the front page the info could have easily been hoyed in rather than starting another one off. Pure attention seeking by posters rearing there heads at the now downbeat tone

I thibk you are getting wound up for nowt to be fair.. personally a new thread for this is worthy.. it would just be totally lost amongst the other stuff

I believe I saw a pre-print of this and it highlighted a marked difference in effectiveness of surgical masks vs cloth masks? Haven’t the time to read it again this morning.

But worth bearing in mind if that conclusion is still borne out in the post-peer review version.

It's a bloody long read and if you don't have a scientific background - I don't - then lots of it is gobbledegook

Am I right in in deducing that infections fall by about 10% when face coverings/masks are introduced and that the fears that mask wearing would lead to a reduction in other measures -social distancing etc. - are unfounded?

Also - am I right in thinking that the populations they used are largely unvaccinated? And would we see different results in a largely vaccinated population?

For the record - I'm wearing my mask (a proper one) as required
 
Anyone that says they don't work is fooling nobody. If the virus is transmitted through the mouth and nose, then if you put something in the way of that then yes it will lessen the projection and the inhalation. The real argument seems to be about percentage of effectiveness.
Oh - and i didn't need a bunch of scientists spending hundreds of thousands on research to tell me :)

Struck me how many droplets come out your mouth on Wednesday.. I was in the car and I'd just put a 3year old with learning difficulties in the car . I did a raspberry while I was sat at lights as it makes him laugh and cos there was loads of sub shining through the window I saw what looked like dust being exhaled but it was all micro droplets.. they really shone out .

Multiply that with people coughing and sneezing in an enclosed space and you can see how easily it's transmitted
 
Out in Newcastle today and quite a few nor wearing them
The usual scratters and families Dolly birds no doubt not wanting to smear make up and the nobody is going to tell me what to do lot
Government has been too soft over this as looking at them you can’t tell me they are exempt
