Racism at Yorkshire CCC

Dunno if it’s just me, but I’ve spent the last few days thinking about past interactions that may have either offended someone, or where I’ve laughed along with stuff

Particularly a while ago.

as far as I know and can recall, I’ve always done the right thing. But it’s a really interesting process to challenge yourself

In my younger days I've definitely used derogatory terms when referring to certain shopping outlets. Now im not. talking about saying the terms to anyones face but you no ' Im off down the #### shop' of 'Going for a '########' after a night out. I dont particularly worry about what I said cos in them days it was said by lots of people and when you brought up in that environment you are going to follow suit I suppose. When I was old enough to know better you realise its not the wisest thing to say and make sure you pass on the experience to your kids yourself.

I don’t think I’ve ever used the first one, but second one I definitely have.

I can’t think of an instance of where I’ve made someone feel uncomfortable which I hope is correct. Interestingly my cricket club, which has many ethnic backgrounds, has debated this a bit in recent days, and it makes me happy to hear people think it’s inclusive

At least this thread seems to have moved on from last weeks " I've got it on good authority that he was a bit of a **at around the club"

Again - I’ll point out that although I posted what I’d been told by someone who’d spent time in the company of Rafiq, it doesn’t mean that either myself or the person who told me in anyway share or condone the abuse Rafiq has heard. This person gave me his personal opinion of Rafiq, as he has done with many, many other cricketers over the years.

That doesn’t mean that anyone has said Rafiq has deserved the years of abuse

Absolutely sickening that like.

Jesus Christ that’s utterly disgusting. What the fuck goes through the head of these cretins?
While racism is unacceptable and unpleasant, this is getting to be a bit of a witch-hunt. Naming a dog Kevin is racist?! Whatever next?

It’s not just naming the dog Kevin though is it? There’s quite a bit of context and background behind that name

Nah mate it’s just because he liked Kevin and Perry Go Large. PC gone mad I tell thee!

Loves the only Englishman to ever win a European Golden Boot apparently!

It’s really no shock to see Hales involved, or at least named. I’m still shocked at how little was made of him kicking a lad in the head in the Stokes incident

I believe him 100% but Jason Gillespie who defended him even stated AR was a very difficult character around YCCC. Obviously that doesnt excuse the blatant racism he has suffered.
People have to instantly recognise in these situations that if indeed Rafiq was a ‘difficult character’ (and I’m not saying he was) it might have something to do with years of racial abuse shaping that character.

Back end of high school I was the definition of the person who felt entitled to use certain words, the worst ones, because I was friends with black people and people of colour, and they laughed along too or said it was fine so how could it be racist etc. The other thing was to call everything that was negative "gay", that was from school through to the start of Uni. I was doing it around people I knew were gay and was very close with, so again it was that same sense of entitlement. As soon as someone challenged me I stopped it but it was more out of a sense of not wanting to hurt my mates feelings than really recognising what it was I was doing

Everyone makes mistakes, it's how you learn from them etc etc. But it scares me looking back, and it makes me think very hard about making sure I'm not doing the same now with different groups or issues. And its a textbook example of how you don't have to have a negative or aggressive outlook to marginalised groups to use aggressive and marginalising terms around them and enforce prejudicial culture.

Bang on...even if he was a "difficult character" ( and lets be honest there's been so much smearing oh him who knows- the 13 who signed that letter want clearing out) a)It doesn't excuse the stuff he was subjected to and b)might the behaviour he was subjected to have some impact on how you behave and result in being "difficult"

Difficult character, dosent fit in, eccentric, stand offish, off-message, thinks they're better than etc

They're all very commonly used terms to solidify black people and people of colour in work and social groups as "other". And like you say, if everyone around you and the institution itself is actively othering you, it becomes a self fulfilling prophesy. Even if you're doing exactly what you're supposed to, if everyone else isn't, you're still the odd one out, and therefore bad.

"I can't recall" can often mean "I can recall, but am embarrassed to talk about it".
It's a meaningless statement because if someone actually holds them to the fact that it leaves open the option that they did say or do something negative, they'll then say they categorically didn't anyway
