Bad Sport - Hansie Cronje

I still say some of the stuff cricketers have been criminalised for (fair enough Cronje was throwing games but others have gone to jail for bowling a no ball, others have bans for not reporting approaches, others have had lengthy bans for telling shady fuckers how a pitch will play) is eye watering given what goes on and what is accepted and has a blind eye turned to it nearly every single day in British & Irish Horse racing.

Excellent series on Netflix called Bad Sport, 6 mini-documentaries about various occurrences of cheating/corruption/match-fixing in sport. The final episode is on the Cronje story.

Definitely recommended it.
Enjoyed that. The first one on college basketball was very good also. I haven’t watched the rest.

The motor racing one is the best, completely mental - watch it and you’ll see what I mean.

I actually thought the Juve one was dull in comparison to the others.

That was the one I enjoyed the least

Different strokes and all that I suppose.
I’ll watch that one next 👍

Going off on a tangent, but there’s a similar themed series called ‘Untold’ and I’d recommend the ‘Crime and Penalties’ episode. It’s about a mobster who bought a hockey team for his 17 year old son. Very funny, but absolutely insane at the same time
It’s really good yeah. I think what resonated most with me is how you can do one thing, and then you’re trapped forever. Not sticking up for him obviously.

I just found it all really sad. Only himself to blame of course, but like you say, once he’d done one thing he was stuck. For good.

I'm not sure if my attention span is getting less in old age but I watched the basketball one first, thought it was ok, I gave up on the motor racing and Italian football episodes. I felt they were both drawn out way too long. The Cronje one I really enjoyed, maybe as I remember being shocked at the time. As I say, it might be an age thing 🤷‍♂️

I would go along with that to some extent. I thought the basketball one and Cronje were both a good watch and while I thought the racing one was fascinating it was dragged out.

I especially liked the bookie saying I just got it in to my head to phone the captain to convince him to go for a declaration, so phoned sa cricket switchboard.

If you are going to lie about having a prior relationship try a bit bloody harder 😂

Just watched it last night, mind boggling, crook of the first order, and doubtless his activities helped screwup countless lives, but couldn't help admiring the guy in a strange sort of way. Anyway you get banged up for life for smuggling 260 tons of dope, and then end up being brand ambassador for a legit cannabis firm on release, only in America!

That was a very good watch. Sad and enlightening. Hard to hate a man that seemed quite prominent in a positive period for a nation, also hard to forgive the way he cornered the youthful players into the fix.

As mentioned before the hold he was under is also something hard to imagine and obviously stopped clear thinking.

cant condone his actions, but don’t feel any hatred towards him. Sadly a career was cut short of someone with a lot to offer the sport and that robbed people of a great teaching. He deserved the ban and once guilty no return should’ve ever been considered. An even sadder end to a sad story with his untimely death and the heartache his family have been dealt is obviously very painful
