NUFC/Sportwashing

I'd prefer Newcastle to achieve success from legitimate in house means.
However, so corrupt is the game of football today and has been for a fair time, I'm now at the stage where, what will be will be. If we are in a position to buy and get among the elite clubs then fine.

The playing field is not level and we've just became another pat of the lopsidedness of that playing field, potentially. Assuming we will be bankrolled.
I know that most of the fans of any club would be more than happy to be in the position we are in.
You'll get your small bunch of fans that'll resist, just like you do with anything controversial.

The main issue here is massive jealousy, in my honest opinion.
Blanket statement. I for one wouldn't trade places.

Speaking for myself, it's very hard to hear criticism of NUFC without succumbing to the urge to defend it. There's a good piece in the Atheltic from a Man City fan. Speaks to how he compartmentalises the two issues. Support the club, anything but for the owners. If fans can get their head around that quickly, all the better.

If the criticism was directed more accurately, it'd quicken that compartmentalism, but that's a lot to ask of other people. Why should they try and make anything easier for Newcastle fans?

The Saudis are a vile state and should not get to bask in reflected praise, or glory by pumping money into a community institution. But who's really to blame for allowing it? The government, the PL, the new owners and even Mike Ashley. So if the criticism from other fans and the media were directed at those groups it'd be easier for Newcastle fans to resist the urge to leap to the clubs' defence. But like I said, it's easier to splash a picture of a daft lad in a headscarf on the back page, under a headline declaring something like 'Newcastle fans warm welcome for the murderers of Khashoggi'. That's better copy.

Unfortunately it misdirects the conversation. PL, Government shouldn't have allowed this takeover. And they're the ones who should be held accountable.
But you say it shouldn't have been allowed. The PL and / or the government shouldn't have let it happen. That's fine, and I agree that's where the blame lies, much more so than on the daft mag with a tea towel on his head.

But, given that, surely you accept that the fans of Newcastle could have had a voice during the two odd years it dragged on for. Could have voiced discontent and suggested that the PL and government should be blocking it. Instead you (your fans) did the opposite. We want Saudi posts, people marching to the PL headquarters, people getting MPs involved. Not to remind them that they should oppose it, but to actively campaign for them to allow it. To sit there now and say "we don't have a say" doesn't make your fan base immune from criticism. If you'd kicked up a fuss at the time and made a big thing about how the values of your club and your community are broadly incompatible with those of the Saudi state, they'd quite possibly have moved on. Instead you rolled out the red carpet...

Aside from that fact it doesn't change the ownership of the club it would be the end of those fanzines as fans would attack them as your fambase is now effectively an online army of bots protecting the ownership.
And this is the reason the Saudi’s bought Newcastle.

I read earlier that MBS paid more for a fake picture than what he paid for Newcastle. Could you imagine how much he would have paid for the propaganda images of British citizens running around with Saudi flags and tea towels on their heads the other day. These images will be shown all around the world and he will be delighted. He probably can’t believe how quickly the sportswashing took place and how cheap it was to achieve.

Any mag happy to play their part in this should hang their heads in shame. I would like to believe the more decent mags out there would play their part in stopping this and at least voice they disapproval at games, but I know this will never happen as long as money is seen to be flowing into the club. This weekends game will see swathes of Saudi flags being waved and simpletons wearing their tea towels to assist in the Saudi regime trying to portray themselves as a canny bunch of lads.

Boycott and/or protest. Tell them they aren't welcomed. You did this with Ashley.
Did it work?
I didn't do anything myself. I just went with the flow as a fan. Why? Because I take the rough with the smooth and understand that my issue is about players and manager/coaches. That's what I'm a fan of.
What goes on behind the scenes will go on regardless.

Simple question. Do you believe that women should be treated equal to men? Do you believe homosexuality should be legal? Are you against capital punishment? Do you believe in freedom of speech?

If you do then you are a human rights activists. Those are some basic rights. Rights that people in Saudi Arabia don't have.
Those are some very complicated questions and issues (plural), that I don't believe to be relevant to my argument buddy...

Depends where you look really. Caulkin was on Football Focus with a lad from True Faith and were saying quite plainly the Saudis are awful, certainly each of the Newcastle podcasts I listen say the same, there's plenty of criticism of the Saudis from the fans, and I'm sure more will come after the giddiness subsides.

Giddiness that follow the headlines "Ashley gone", "Newcastle now richest club on the planet", "Bruce to be sacked", to be clear.

Thanks for that - it was I was hoping to hear. At the moment the England football team is providing some moral leadership for the first time just as Newcastle have taken football into the gutter. I hope you are correct about dissent in the future.

That's fair enough but I do think you can do something about it. Do you forget the protests against Ashley. It's so easy for me to say but I would not go back if these people bought club - as I keep saying it's just bizarre that they are now Premier League owners. My surprise is the lack of outrage from your fans.
The lack of outrage would be among any set of fans. Obviously it can be argued because it's just us at the moment that's under the attack from all angles.
It goes back to subjective morality.
I keep saying it because it's true.

What happens if they're playing in the sky bet championship next season ?

@MagpieMediaa: The consortium are currently exploring options to buy out the remainder of Fun88 shirt sponsorship. This is due to betting bans around Saudi Arabia meaning shirts will be produced with no sponsor for fans in Saudi Arabia #NUFC

Your assuming Mags have a modicum of shame !! They have none when it comes to football

Of course I do like many people. I find surreal that the murderer of Khashoggi now owns a Premier League club. I read a lot about it, you couldn't avoid it and there was international outrage and now the person who ordered it now owns your club. How could I not have a problem with that? I find it surreal. I am just surprised there hasn't been more outcry from Newcastle supporters. When Di Canio was appointed at Sunderland I know fans who stopped going but this is another universe.
You really feel that strongly?

What a wanker! His Excellence is a close friend to a man who sent a hit squad to murder Jamal Kasshoggi and has locked up journalists and tortured them. And here is Kevin Downie acting like a giddy schoolgirl who is about to meet Ed Sheeran.
Bloke saying "love to be a fly on the wall when he meets Levy"

Awww aye that bad man Levy. They just dont f***ing get it.

Except you can't simply sportswash what goes on behind the scenes. As a "fan" you're complicit in it whether you like it or not.

You have no idea what thread has had the most replies since August 8th? No idea at all? You don't think it might be this one? Funny how you call a photograph thread that has 12k replies since 2014 as 'truly remarkable', but 16k replies in a month, not noteworthy... I wonder how many replies the July NUFC had? Or the June NUFC thread had? I bet they weren't noteworthy either...
You didnt answer my questions traitor.

So absolutely anyone could have taken over the club as long as they were richer than anyone else irrespective of how obnoxious they were ! Instant success is all that matters for Newcastle Utd ?
I didn't want rid of Ashley because I was worried some chancer would come in after buyout and put us into oblivion.
However, if it turned out like that and we ended up in the doldrums but still running as a club, I'd still be the same fan and supporter.

It just so happens we've got these owners and again, there's nothing I can do and nor am I going to apologise for it. I'm a fan.
