I honestly hope they do try to spend ludicrous sums of money. They'll end up paying over the odds for average PL players, and clubs will start charging them extra just because they're owned by people with ridiculous wealth. So they'll be barely any further forwards having spent an absolute fortune.

its a strange one like… the haggling etc the above you've mentioned and the borrowing the PIF did etc

however the Saudis have paid probably nearly a billion quid to get this done - the piracy settlement and the purchase price

The piracy settlement is 100% to ensure they can legally watch the Asia Cup (in Qatar) next month on BeIN and the 2022 World Cup. They simply couldn't have a tournament on its doorstep, that KSA may well win, and not be able to watch it.

It may clear the way for the takeover but I am certain that is not at the core.

An investment fund that throws away money, its set up to create enduring economic benefits not fritter billions? If the deal goes through the KSA goal is already achieved, ethics validated, reputation cleansed.
I downgraded it to millions, and I'm pretty sure they'll spunk millions... they won't be maintaining Ashley levels of investment. It'll be the equivalent of those gold Ferrari and Mclarens, possibly diamond studded Bentleys... a garish boastful mess that'll catch the eye. Some will love it and others will laugh.

I'm surprised they'll let Staveley drive it mind ;)

THEY ARE NOT!!

The mags think this is the case, but they won't.

Back in 2008 when City were taken over there were few competitors with cash and they signed Robhinho (who actually thought he was going to Utd), Jo, De Jong, Bellamy and Shaun Wright-Phillips at a cost of 100m. Using the price of footballs inflation figures that is 236m.
For comparison their 1996 spend of 20m is around that in today's terms and back then they really had Man Utd with deep pockets.

It just is not going to happen and all this BS with pie charts showing PIF wealth is nonsense. PIF actually had to borrow money in 2020 to fund equity purchases as all their assets are tied up. Just relax, let them enjoy their moment and watch how it inevitably falls apart.
I think it's clear that, at least initially, they won't be spending a fortune on players. They'll probably have to splash out in January, but good luck finding value there.

At the end of the day, it would have been great for Ashley to stay longer, but there's still very little detail about how this consortium is going to rebuild the club. They've kept the odd deal structuring in place, which makes me wonder what is actually going on.

There's no real precedent for this type of deal in football. It's clearly not a PSG or Man City type takeover. It feels opportunistic.

I was quite concerned that the publicity around the deal would allow a savvy football investor to take advantage of the situation. That's not happened, and we're going to get a full-on circus instead.

She's there's there for one single reason and that's the colour of her skin in my opinion, a good front man for them.

Yes. 100%.

Im talking about 6 year old kids with a Sunderland fan as a fatha who decide they’re supporting Newcastle. We lost 000s of young fans to the Mags in the 90s and never got them back.
Yep. My lad is 6 and has started coming to the SOL. But as we live in Newcastle and he is more interested in star players than anything else, I’ll have a battle on my hands stopping him becoming a Mag if they are top of the Prem with big name players. Will do my best!!

I wonder how the British government are going to react to the news a bunch of terrorist sympathisers and murderers are about to come aboard. Personally don’t think it’ll go through as human rights has been at the forefront of everyone’s minds in the last 18 months. Can see sponsors pulling out soon like

their pool of companies is huge, sponsors won't pull out

I'm sure you're right it will be diamond studded nonsense, owners that are a perfect match for their ever aspirational hordes. Personally I don't see them leveraging or indeed spending the vast sums needed just to begin to compete. In theory they could sign Haaland for £150M, but they still need another 18 top players. Man Utd have spunked a billion in 8 years and still not won the title.

We were miles behind them 93 - 96, and that didn’t finish us off as a viable force against them. We still came back at them and handed them their arse in quite a few derbies.

They beat us 5 times in a row in the 1990s. Fair enough we trumped that in later years! but at that time they were on a totally different level to us, as they are now anyway regardless if they get their takeover or not. At the end of the day Sunderland fans will still support Sunderland and they'll pick up the gloryhunters and more fans from "mixed" areas. Can't say that really bothers me. My area (Peterlee) will still always be predominantly Sunderland.

An absolutely abhorrent regime, with multiple human rights abuses, including the Kashoggi murder, which puts them beyond the pale in my eyes.

At least they will get their wish, as all they wanted to do was compete. No doubt the more attention seeking, will be wearing the Saudi headscarfs at the next match, as its all banter.

I’m far more interested in how smart PiF are and will be with the running of the club than how much money they have.

I think players, guided by their agents, will want a slice of the pie if the money is on offer but throwing a king’s ransom a load of talented mercenaries won’t get them far without a proper, decent strategy.

They need at least 5 players bringing in to avoid relegation, plus a manager.I think we all expect that to happen.More than disappointing,I know, but no point on letting it affect our lives as much as it will with many on here.We have our own project, which I’m enjoying, and will continue to enjoy hopefully. One thing for sure, our noisy neighbours will get noisier.
