Modern retires from tests

Suprised how high most of his bowling averages were away from home mind, especially in a couple of Asia countries.
115 in Aus, 49 in India, South Africa and UAE. 33 in England and Wales is canny and did well against the second tier nations over the last few years in Bangladesh, WI and Sri Lanka.
To me he has been a handy player who should never have necessarily been told he is 1st choice spinner. Essentially he is let down by our need to have as many all rounders as possible, with Anderson being a walking wicket and Broad the same for a good period over the last few years.

Sure was, although he's not alone. It's something we're obsessed with, I've never understood it. Have something great...? Excellent, let's change it round!

our top order struggled so we moved our number 8 to number at one point and our wicket keeper averaging 40 plus at 7 to number 5 while keeping the gloves

stokes stayed in place and no surprise he’s done the best, albeit he is a brilliant player

Think that’s harsh on Anderson and Broad personally. Most test sides have poor 10s and 11s.

Anderson averages 9, vs 6 for Nortje, 5 for Bumrah and 4 for Gabriel. 12s for Lyon and Hazlewood as well

I agree. It's more my irritability that they constantly choose bowlers who can bat a bit, and batsmen who can bowl a bit to fill the middle order.

I agree with that of course
We just seem so reluctant to pick a spinner who can't bat slightly. Done it with mo, Dawson, Bess etc and I suppose even swann to an extent, except he was a brilliant spinner for England. We have lacked a spinner to even just tie an end down to give our pace bowlers more rotation to keep fresh

He was a really good player. When he was in the team batting at 8, what a batting line up England had then! I cannot criticise him as a Test batsman/bowler but just think it's a shame that in my eyes he didn't continue and concentrated on forgettable limited overs cricket when he did.

Sad that it’s the last we’ll see of him in Tests and shame that he couldn’t carry on to reach 3000 runs and 200 wickets. I guess that encapsulates what his Test career was all about, brilliant but a sense of what could have been.

Good cricketer, but still shouldn’t have used our national team for a political statement. Those pro Palestine wrist bands he wore was a poor choice imo representing our country. But was talented and was a decent bat.

Edmonds, Emburey, Illingworth, Giles etc.

English spinners need to be able to bat and hold down an end or they're passengers till day four. Unfortunately Mo could only do one of those reliably.

Totally serious but Trevaskis must be in with a shout of playing for England in a few years due to his ability to do both.

Bit of an odd thing to bring up on a thread dedicated to a very good cricketer for England over the years.
Admit it mate, there's a very small part of you that doesn't like Muslims and/or Pakistanis very much. You have quite a back catalogue for remarks suggesting so. If you were innocent yourself I could maybe accept your bizarre campaign against me a little more, but you've posted some pretty poor stuff. More than I ever have.
