Modern retires from tests

An excellent cricketer.

The way he bats on a good day is beautiful.

Shame to see him go.

That's one way to ensure you aren't picked for the Ashes, then get a ton of grief when you drop out.

Brought back in during the summer, mediocre performances, given vice captaincy temporarily, selected again after mediocre performance and then retires.

I think he’s had a bit of a raw deal over the last few years but to say our current test match set up is a farce would be far too complimentary.

Bit strange that this is your first thought

My first thought is he has been an excellent player for England, won a lot of games for England, and has delivered some class moments.

the right time for him, canny player.
His record is average

 15 players in test cricket history have done what he has done.

laughable some people on here man. why do they even watch cricket?

I despair.

Is it his bowling or batting record which is excellent

I think he has been a very good player for England. But the announcement of his retirement now given the circumstances this summer with him coming back into the side, made VC temporarily and Root saying he was first choice spinner is just fairly typical of all things test cricket in England at present.

Right decision imo. Was at the top of his game a few years back but seems to have lost his way the last couple, especially consistency.
