Ian Botham appointed trade envoy to Australia

He's got good contacts like Ian Chapell.
Sounds like he'll be a hit!
Is he actually qualified to do this? I'm not sure what he would be expected to do. Cut a white tape on a new supermarket? I expect he could do that. Mind you he also has business interests out there, wine and vinyards and maybe be more idk but you'd think he would know something about the wine business and import/export in that sector.

Its not being offended to point out f***ing stupid comments someone's made in the best, when they're supposed to be representing the nation.

uh oh someone’s offended

he has said these things no doubt in some kind of banterish way, the exact way the Aussies lap up, a long time ago and the second he has a figure head role someone trawls through his previous comments to find something to make them outraged

people are absolute whoppers these days

The job is to be a "face" for British producs, not a negotiator of trade deals. So, as a well-known and hugely popular firgure among a large Aussie demographic, I'd say yes.

Why aren’t the ‘products’ paying him to do that then? Should taxpayers really be footing the bill of advertising for private companies??

All seems very odd.

If it increases investment, creates jobs in and increases tax revenues in the UK then surely it's a good thing.

Promoting UK business abroad has always been a function of government. MInisters lead trade delegations to other countries, Embassies regularly hosting receptions with local big wigs, industry representatives and the occasional minor royal.
