Work Leaving Gifts

My partner left his work yesterday after more than 3 years as a school cleaner. They now finished deep cleaning the school ready for the new year.

Whenever teachers or other staff have left in the past, they have always come round collecting. "Oh Jemima's leaving and we're all putting in £5". Even though of course cleaners are on much less wages than teachers and £5 can be a lot of money for us. When the teachers have left, they give them champagne and flowers and vouchers for the shops. When my partner left yesterday, you can imagine what he got - nothing. The same as always. We joke about it and say "I just picked up my carrier bag and left..." because that is all that you can do.

He has been a good cleaner and reliable. Friendly to everyone as far as I know. I think he didn't get a gift because we are underclass.

Well anyway, the gifts here are usually only from duty anyway and not with any sentiment. When I left my job in Cuba to come here, my workmates gave me the gift of a written tribute. They read it out to me at a meeting we had to say goodbye. It was very emotional and with sentiment that they were sad I was going. Although it didn't cost anything, it was worth much more than the gifts they give here anyway.

What have you had as a gift When leaving your work?
In fairness that is shitty from the teachers - but were they in school?

Why on earth would a school cleaner be given a leaving present?

Teachers get them off kids etc. at the end of the school year. What an utterly bizarre thread this is.

Or from the other perspective, we have witnessed over many posts a consistent behaviour pattern?
Cuban person commenting on Cuban politics? Looks more socialist to "commie" to me

It is what it is, dare I say it...
Men of a certain age, of a certain stereotype, trying to poke fun at a South American female who has dared to admit she and partner work in low paid jobs
Hard working people who don’t whinge about not getting hand outs? The north east has always been a proud area
Get away man. A work gift isn't a handout.

I wouldn't be that bothered personally but I haven't worked a job where I didn't get a leaving gift since I did odd bits of jobs at uni

It's always the same pattern. Start a controversial and emotive thread, say very little else and leave people arguing.

Definitely suspicious.

My reply wasn’t based on that one post. It’s posts over years of constant moaning how everybody gets it better than their family.

Hardly I would imagine. Commented on BLM and Cuba and clearly upset the righties am presuming. Rather socialist in outlook. Controversial and emotive is the only reason most of the politics forum users use it to be fair.

Anyway, thread was derailed after 2 posts and is way off-topic already. I'll leave it to you wealthy capitalist landowners and factory owners to poke fun at the poor classes.

Someone has probably already posted that the likes of cleaners should really be buying their employers a gift to show their gratitude at being handed a wage

400 posts since 2019 suggests that the OP barely registers on the "active scale" on here. Socialist female persona will stand out of course

In fairness, now that you mention it there have been more posts recently.

Prior to that though it was a definite pattern of create thread, say fuck all in the next 20+ pages of chaos. Repeat 4 months later. Odd!

There's a bloke retiring at our place he's never put anything in for anybody but he's 1st to the bar to get the beers in, I find that a bit strange

At my Mrs (no) former place of work they had a whip round for one of the bosses getting married. From about 30 staff they got £12.50.

From what I understand it was going to be £13, but one of the staff to get the envelope last had a look after they hoyed their 50p in and took it back out again.

I've packed in contributing at ours ( lock down has helped , easier to ignore the email requests ) I work predominantly with younger women and they're always having kids or leaving , getting married, it's almost like tax.

The whole leaving work thing is shit. Presents, insincere speeches, all dreadful. Last time I left, I told my colleagues I was leaving on the Friday. However I told my manager I'd be leaving on the Thursday. But ss she was gobshitery twat, I knew she wouldn't keep her trap shut, so I made sure I had another days holiday untaken so I actually left on the Wednesday. I keep in touch with the decent folks.
