Hard to say really, but probably yes. I think that it would have taken longer probably to turn, but he's such a lying, clichéd buffoon it wouldn't have taken too long for fans to turn on him and see him for what he is.

I think following Rafa would have been tough for any manager really, but I think we could have done/do better then Bruce. I'm not sure any other PL club would have went for him.
Many turned the day he was announced.
He wasn't my first choice by any means however he has done as well as Benitez did.
Who would you suggest we appoint that could do better. We are a mid table Premier League club, that is where we finished.

If he gets big money and flops, they will just do what they always do and make a lot of noise and attempt to rewrite history.

"We never worshipped him like, daft bastard sent wor down y'knar"

just like they never spat on "Sir Bobby", or how they "lit up" the 90's.
I think they only "lit up the 90s" in their own deluded minds. Saying that it's bound to stand out for them as they were shite for the majority of their history prior and have been shite since. Though tbh the vast majority of plastics (92ers) that morphed to them will not know of their history prior to Keegan as they probably didn't even know they existed so had nothing to gauge against 🤣

Isn't that right @Sabre Mag?

That was my point earlier in the thread! One of their sites went on about the team that "Lit up the 90s". Only one team has any claim to have "lit up that decade" and that was a Manchester United side that had 8 trophies in 10 years, including 5 Premier League titles. (For the purposes of comparison, the "luminous" Newcastle side had none, and havent had any since).

Its a prime example of how they try and rewrite their history.

That is one of the toughest question in football! Do you roll the dice, go for untested, and hope to find the next Mourinho, Nagelsmann, Touchel.....but what if it goes tits up and you are lumbered with 100m's of dead wood. Derby tried it with Cocu, Palace with De Boer, Everton with Silva. Ashley doesn't take chances hence Mclaren, Benitez, Bruce, Pardew. He weakened with Shearer and look what happened.

They started the first 3 seasons of the 90s in the old 1st division, nearly getting relegated until King Kev came, the last 2 seasons in the prem they finished 13th both times, so they lit up the 90s for about 5 seasons by my reckoning.

In the interest of balance they did have some exciting players in that period but they won feck all. We all need to thank Didier Drogba annually for stopping them winning the UEFA cup, in 2004, else we would never have heard the last of it.

Even the most biased fans must be able to appreciate some of these, in the same way I'd expect a mag to appreciate Quinn & Phillips, Arca....

- Aspiralla '96-98;
- Ginola '95-97;
- Beardsley '93-97;
- Ferdinand '95-97
- Solano '98-04

I also liked Pistone, who disappeared off the radar once Ruud arrived. I bumped into Ferdinand at work one day - he was giving a seminar to some MBA's - great speaker, very knowledgeable and should be higher profile in the game.

no two ways about it, they had some really class players in that period. I'd add Laurent Robert, to the list at least, and probably a few more.
For a Newcastle fan undoubtedly they were great times. But that was not the norm, and never has been for Newcastle, anyone outside of the club knows that. But they don't get it. They cling on to a few years of relative success, like it matters to everyone else.

They think that because, 30 years ago, they had a squad (that they couldnt afford), which was top of the league for a bit, that they are a "big club" which has been "hard done to".

Truth is, very few people give a toss about them anymore. They have certainly not been "hard done to"

stepped aside from winning trophies to light up the league...

Has a 500k contract put on his head.

Good post mate. Robert was class, though I was trying to stick to 1990's. Halcyon days for them but as you say it was never the norm.

I can't even remember who was available at the time Benitez went. I would rather we had went for Eddie Howe personally. But I think Bruce is here as long as Ashley is.

Bloody hell.... I'd have put money on Robert playing in the very late 90s.... Im stunned to learn he signed in '01

I could have sworn I needed him in a 90's Merlin sticker album
But but the entatainaaaas man

Watching them blow that 12 point lead was very "entertaynin"

I don't go with fans of that era, but we have a generation that grew up being spoiled by virtue of their age. I wasn't far off to be fair, my first game was 89, but I don't remember it well.

I don't think it's wrong for fans to demand more or better, I just don't care as much as that anymore. I just like a pint with the lads, a moan after (more often than not) and home. Lots of the loudest are non attenders, and I avoid Twitter for that reason.

Very few people ever did in reality.

I would agree with Howe. He would have been my pick.

Robert was paraded on the pitch before an Intertoto game. He had a class left foot like, but was inconsistent.

Look to appoint a steady manager who can keep us in the Premier League. Invest behind the scenes whilst remaining solvent. Focus on youth development and shrewd recruitment. Worked for Leicester nd Southampton. It is the only way the also-rans can hope to have a spell in the limelight.

The lack of investment in the academy and infrastructure is a worry for me. Stadium starting to look shabby, players bathing in bins. It's not a good look. Academy not producing any real talent for years.
