Derbyshire v Essex

Abandoned prior to Day 2 due to a positive Covid Test, the ECB have suggested they’re going to release the points awarded for the tie ‘later’.

Definitely one to keep an eye on. Essex will feel aggrieved given how they were on the way to a fairly easy win, with the chance too of making it into the top group - but I can’t see how Derbyshire could be penalised unless they’ve found to have been doing something wrong regarding the protocols and further to that, I can’t see how any justification could be found for penalising the other 3 teams competing for ‘promotion’.

A precedent of sorts was set last season when Gloucs on 66-6 saw their match against Northants abandoned at lunchtime on the first day when a Northants player tested positive.

The game finished as a draw with Gloucs taking 8pts and Northants 10pts.

Then the precedent has been set but surely not even FTECB could amend the points awarded. Looks very likely anyway that both Warks and Worcs will gain draws which would have made 1st or 2nd place impossible for Essex even if they had gained maximum points.

The comments by Andre Nel (acting Essex head coach) seemed to suggest they’re resigned to getting the usual draw points and therefore missing out on the top group.

The problem then is, if we draw against Notts, that we go into Div 2, carrying with us the defeats against Essex. Our "average points" will be a lot less than those of Essex.

Just the way it is. Essex lost a title in the late 80's / early 90's because of a substandard pitch points deduction. The match itself was on a wicket prepared by the local council parks staff and they had no say in how they wanted it. It's partly why Essex no longer bother having home matches across the county

Been removed from the North Group of the T20.
Will it improve Durham's chance to proceed?
