Can’t speak for the print version, but the lack of cricket coverage on their website is a f*cking disgrace. I knew when Tim Wellock ceased writing for them that they’d struggle to maintain the level of quality coverage of Durham they enjoyed during his 25 years at the helm - but a quick glance now and it seems they’ve given up completely.

Really disappointing, was the case that Wellock jumped before he was pushed?

coverage is non existent in most papers. Any match reports are provided free to the paper by the ECB network of reporters i.e. the scorer in many cases.

Very disappointing. I remember when Tim Wellock used to do more or less a full page of what used to be a broadsheet for each days play. On top of that, he used to do a good few paragraphs on every session, the lunch and tea reports would appear on the Echo website within minutes of any interval.

He mentions in his new book that his services 'were terminated' after 30 years as a freelance and he covers his changing role in his last years in the last chapter so I wont spoil it for you!

He also mentions in his introduction about how in 1992 there were three reporters covering DCCC ( I imagine the other two were Jeff Brown of The Journal and Tim Rich of The Sunderland Echo) plus a radio man and by 2019 the only county reporter left on the circuit was from The Yorkshire Post.

Northern Echos days have to be numbered surely. Our family bought it every Saturday (grandma bought it all 6 days with the Sunday Sun on Sunday)
 
The Northern Echo only concerns itself with Darlington and it’s environs. Oh, and North Yorks.

I suspect it probably makes sense mate as it’s become a niche interest. As well written as it may have been, how many extra papers would they sell?

When I log on to Durham streams on YouTube there are often only 300-500 watching.
