Durham v Essex

Durham have been properly schooled today
Their bowling was much tighter and they scored at a much higher rate and even though they were 15 for 3 and then fifty odd for 5 they continued to build match winning partnerships scoring at a. Very decent lick
With the fragility of our batting we will do well to reach 150 imo
You have got to live in hope but I cannot see anything but a very heavy defeat
We don’t have batsmen scoring consistently heavily against the better teams is how I am viewing matters
We are on a par with Derby or Worcs but don’t have any real batting depth

I think you hit the mark with those comments. So far we have seen improvement but this game just got to hold hands up and appreciate they are better and that's why they're champions. Few things I'm not overly convinced with from what I've seen these last two days but we shall see how we go next week. Is Borthwick captain material? Surely we have to find a better spin option? Do we give Salisbury a game next week ahead of Carse or Potts? Jones needs a score otherwise do we give Clark a go? Essex are a fantastic team so I'm not too concerned as we are far more competitive these days. See how we go tomorrow

They haven't applied themselves at all in this match. Its like the wash out at Derby totally broke their focus. Lees and Young were building some good partnerships at the top of the order, on difficult wickets, Young leaves and Lees implodes. Bedingham has looked shit since the first drop of rain, he must be hoping we have a dry summer. Borthwick has been poor with bat and ball since he returned, one innings aside. Picking Jones is almost as twatful as picking Poynter. He's struggled when he's been given a chance in the first team recently, 20 ball ducks. What did Franklin expect to happen? Why didn't they pick Trevaskis or Clarke?

Proven failure clarke

totally agree although Clarke has had ample opportunities so picking him again would be a retrograde step imo. Problem is we've got no reserve batsmen, Fisher appear s to be a walking wicket in the 2nds. Hopefully fine weather appears to be settled so batting woes will disappear. Trevaskis has to be picked to see if he can offer some control bowling mid-innings and he's probably the best reserve batsman.
Hate to have to criticise Badger but I'm afraid at the minute he can't bat, can't bowl, can't field and can't captain. Harsh but true.
Keep the faith🙏

It's not harsh at all regarding Borthwick, I've heard a few people say that today.

Correct about Clark but he'll be waiting for his chance especially if Jones fails tomorrow, ultimately he's pretty much all we have waiting in reserve, though they may consider Paul Coughlin or Dickson.

Back down again tomorrow, wife with me tomorrow, she wants to go and see Cook and to be fair to her it's probably the last time we'll see him up here.

I jokingly mentioned at the beginning of the season that I hoped Borthwick didnt suffer from 'Roseberryitis' but he's definitely displaying the four classic symptoms of the condition.

There were a few in The Trapdoor saying that as well this afternoon.

We gave them a good game at Chelmsford. They are not unbeatable but we have to be on top of our game to have a chance of turning them over. We have been below par in this game. I think it was a mistake to play Potts, especially in a game against the champions. He has had a number of County Championship chances over the last few years but hasn’t convinced on any occasion. Salisbury only lost his place because Wood became available - and was considered unlucky by some at the time. I don’t know what he’s done to fall out of favour. He got 11 wickets in the first three games this season. It’s taken Potts 9 games going back to 2017 to get that many! But he’s still young and has plenty of time to mature and flourish.
I felt sorry for Borthwick this afternoon. We’d got them five down for 53 but only Rushy and Raine were really performing with the ball. He needed to turn to a third seamer he could rely upon to put pressure on the batsmen without leaking runs. He had nowhere to go. Whereas Essex had Siddle, we had Potts (not threatening) and Carse (leaking runs). Essex, of course, still have Harmer up their sleeve (unused in the first innings)! No doubt we’ll meet him tomorrow as he picks at the skeleton after Sam Cook, Jamie Porter and Peter Siddle have eaten a tasty meal of the Durham flesh. Borthwick with the ball is no match for Harmer.

Got to agree about Potts. I have been shouting for him to be given a chance, but didn't expect him to be opening the bowling against the champions and its been a step too far. He's lacking any wicket taking deliveries. Bowling consistently on fifth stump is fine in List A but in First Class cricket they can just block it all day.

Regarding Clarke, I simply put his name forward as he's the form batsman in the seconds. Jones has had a few good innings there lately but has struggled every time he came into the first team. Again, asking him to perform against Essex was a big ask.

Some of the criticism here sounds very harsh. We’ve had an excellent start to the season, we are a division two team and have finally come unstuck against the champions. First game of the season we haven’t been in a position to win at some stage, the progress is massive from the last few years. Definite upwards curve for us and all the more reason to be optimistic

This is just a straw man as nobody here isn't pleased of the overall improvement at the club since FTECB. However we are at perfect liberty to point out what they're getting wrong.

Essex got schooled by Warwickshire and we should have beaten them comfortably at Chelmsford. They're also missing their best batsman and playing on our turf that negates their main spin bowling weapon. They won't have fancied coming up here and must be delighted with how it's gone for them.

You also forgot to mention that Derbyshire were the better side last week. There were some warning signs in that performance.

Brutal but I agree with the sentiment but not with the way you put it. Clearly a good batter (waits for Brandon ............ hmm, silence) but short form cricket is his game.

The guy (poster not Clarke) is a troll. Clarke had a near identical first class record to Burnham prior to this season. He's also one of the first names in our T20 team. Michael Jones is a promising young batsman, but he's struggled to make a run when called into the first team and clearly isn't ready. Clarke is also the form batsman of the second XI. Its a shame we don't have Harte or Scott Steel to call on, and Dickson has been such a disappointment, but if the remit is to strengthen the batting then Clarke is the best of whats available IMO.
