Why can cats disappear for ages?

Some cats are desperate to get outside. I was painting my bedroom floor, window open yesterday, I'd just got him in and the bugger legged it out the window. About 12 foot drop. Fortunately no damage done.

Mine has always been a housecat because we live on a busy main road. A few years ago he must have sneaked out. When we realised he was missing we looked everywhere for him, walked around the street shouting for him and shaking treats. We were pretty much resigned to him being gone when my Mrs read an article that said if they haven't been out before and get spooked by something they'll hide and won't come out even if they know it's you that's shouting on them. We found him wedged between our front stairs and a bush! Knew he was relieved to be found as he didn't fight me when I picked him up and carried him inside (he doesn't tolerate being picked up.

You never know what the cat has experienced while being out, it may have been spooked by something. One of mine used to be very friendly with people, but he has become wary. Also get them to check other people's sheds and garages. I shut one of mine in for a few hours this week. I was more upset than he was!
This happened to my old neighbors cat. Got locked in the other neighbours garage for almost a week...It used to be really friendly and visit me and suddenly it stopped visiting.

It wouldn't go out the house after that episode.

Cats will also bugger off to find a new 'house' if a new more dominant cat has moved in on the territory.

A friend's cat has gone missing a week ago and not came back. They have rang everywhere and no cats found (dead or alive) that is him.

My friend is telling the kids that the cat has gone to his girlfriends (could have followed another cat on heat suppose) for a week.

BTW dogs > cats, I have never had a cat incase people think this is for me

On this theme, again, a mate down south moved mid March, he’s got two and they escaped whilst he was moving. They were out for a bite to eat yesterday and spotted one of them and managed to grab him. A bit skinny and a few tics, but otherwise fine.

Had to get him put to sleep last night. Have to say I'm a bit more gutted than I thought I'd be. Miss him pottering around the house even if he was a smelly bastard 😔
Aww man I'm so sorry to hear that, me and the bairn are still upset about our cat that we had to have put to sleep in January - he left a huge hole in our hearts, it was very painful so I know how you feel. Big ((((hugs)))) fella, keep howld xxx

Any news on the cat mate?
Unfortunately not mate. There have been about 4 really good sightings (he is a grey almost blue colour which thought was rare), but each time have went to see these sightings, it has been someones actual cat.

3 weeks tomorrow the cat has been missing. It is chipped and hopefully no news is good news from no calls to say cat has been found dead etc. But looks like potentially just gone and lived with another person or got so far away from home it is lost.

Sorry to hear that mate. It is hard losing a pet but I really believe that it is better to have loved and lost them than never have had them in your life at all.

We feed a bunch of stray cats near where we live(we also end up neutering them and taking them to the vets when they have issues - had half a dozen die this year) we have had cats coming to eat every day then disappearing for months and even years in one case and then reappearing as if nothing has happened.
