Can't imagine it. But I'm not old enough to comment on their history since I'm mid 30s.

If you ask me I'd want to see them bankrupt and to fold. I'd take pleasure in that. Some of their fans want us back in the premier League because they 'enjoy the derby day.' That mentality is alien to me.
I never get this feeling some people have?

I have mates who are mags and I really miss derby days as enjoy the banter and piss taking over what is after all.....a game of football.

Question for the oldies here...

People often say that SAFC - NUFC rivalry wasn’t as bad in the 50s/60s/early 70s, and I seem to recall Steve Bruce when he was SAFC manager going on about his street in wallsend having red and white flags or something for our 73 final?

If it really wasn’t as bad then, then you can imagine there might have been a sentiment of wanting a fellow NE team to win.

so my question for those old enough to remember ( I was born 74 so only ever remember the hatred from the mid 80s to the present day ) ; what did SAFC fans think about the mags being in the 74 cup final? Was there any black and white flags in Sunderland, or did any Sunderland supporters want the mags to win cos they were another NE team?

Genuinely interested to know this , just occurred to me the other day when I was reading an article about 2 mags in 74 cup final who they reckon started the replica shirt trend for adults

I wanted em to get stuffed which they did, because they shouldn't have been there after their fans behaviour vs Forest.

I was an 11 year old in Accrington so had no Mackem bias against them.

If Bruce said it, it was likely a load of rubbish.

Watched it at home with my Dad and our kid. Oh, how we laughed, and laughed , and laughed. They were totally shite. Hope this helps.

I was 12 and we had just got our first colour telly a few weeks before the final. All of my family were Sunderland and we were jumping around like lunatics. Can’t remember anyone of red and white persuasion wanting the mags to win - I think the days of people wanting all north east teams to do well were long gone. Probably one of the most one-sided finals in history.

Just remember they were in awe of our famous Haway The Lads and started using howay the lads.
And of course the famous question, What gets taken to Wembley but never used - Malcolm Macdonald.
Is that true about haway the lads? Did our use of that chant predate theirs?
Question for the even older ones then? What about their cup wins in the 50s? How did they go down on Wearside? Anyone know?

Of Course, there’s old photo’s of Sunderland fans standing on the Sunderland railway station waiting to go to Wembley in 1937 with fans with top hat’s with Haway the Lads on

Me da (RIP) was one of the old school that you refer, he loved his football and would go to the landfill to watch a team or a player that he liked and yes he did want all the regional teams to do well. Myself I can't abide the gravy stained gits and I am getting on a bit. I can remember the '74 Cup Final and passionately didn't want them holding "our Cup". We would have to give up the trophy but I wanted Liverpool to be the next holders.

Fair enough. I admire you for the way you keep it in perspective. I'm getting better at that as I get older but I still have that south American feeling.

Are these the two
Mags love to rewrite history
Wasn’t Alan hull wearing one in stage for lindesfarne before 74

But the mags weren’t using howay the lads at the same time?
Why no, we are there guiding light. Copy, copy, copy. As they say, imitation is highest form of flattery. Can’t live without us. See the the building the scum are building on the news last week to copy our Beacon of Light, even the same shape.
