Haseeb Hameed

England like spinners who can hold down an end and bat or they tend to be passengers in the first innings. Amar Virdi makes Monty Panesar look like a decent batsman. Moeen can bat but not hold down an end. Leach, despite his heroics at Headingley and Lords, is a number 11. They settled on Bess as he was useful at both and 'one for the future. His performances in South Africa were outstanding. Unfortunately he has struggled for consistency and lost his line and length in India but you don't just chuck a young player like that on the scrap heap.

Everyone was fapping themselves about Critchley before we played Derbyshire and he served up some absolute buffet stuff to Bedingham on an unsympathetic wicket. Being able to keep things tight on unfriendly wickets is, unfortunately, part of an England spinner's remit.

Mooen is a fourth innings bowler; Bess a first. Each to their own, but I know which one i'd rather have with four seamers like.

Leach is a bit of both, but I certainly wouldn't say Bess's batting is worth keeping him ahead of Leach.

He's only 23, was doing fine and improving nicely till the second test in India.
All about opinions mate, but think the figures or average he has does not paint the full picture imo, and further more think England know that as well, the 5 for he got in the first test in Sri Lanka was the worst bowling display I have seen get 5 wickets.

He bowls for too many bad balls for a test cricketer, his own county let him go on loan, and only he got selected in the first place of the back of Somerset producing massive spinning wickets over a couple of years.

Like I say all about opinions but I think he is no where near good enough for test cricket.

Don’t want to sound too harsh but that’s my genuine opinion

I agree nowhere near good enough for me (hope he develops and proves me wrong). Root is a better bowling option than Bess. Lack of quality spinners always been an issue (English wickets etc, not good for developing them) can only really think of Swann in last 30 years. Tuffers and monty had spells where they were decent at times but not consistent

Joe Root is not a better bowling option than Bess ffs

Bess’ test record with the ball isn’t bad nor is his overall first class record - Root is a part time bowler. Bess is only 23 as well, he seems to have been written off because he bowled a some full tosses against India

Root turns it more and bowls a more consistent line and length. Root is part time (due to how high he bats) if they both bowl a 1000 test overs next year I know who I would bet to take most wickets.
Root should never be a front line test spinner by a long way but neither is Bess.
Like I said before hope Bess proves me wrong but in olden day cricket terms at the moment he could not turn a ball on a corrugated roof😀

This is a development mind

Are you now anti-Hundred like the rest of us?!!
Always said from the very beginning preferred T20 and said hundred was too short, that always been my stance mate.

Would have liked the tournament the same format but 20 overs a side, as going under that is going too far.

However always wanted to see how it went and if it increased participation and more kids start playing because of it before writing it off.

Basically my point has always been give it a chance see how it goes keep a open mind.

Was never bothered like others about the politics ,the people behind it, the counties not included etc etc.

Just wanted to see and hope it possibly gets more people taking up the game of cricket, that simple really.

Maybe because you and I had such interesting and long enjoyable :D debates on that matter you have seen me as a lover of it incorrectly.

As I have said many times confused how people can be a hated or lover of something before it’s even started!

Guess the question is though, would England be better including another quality fast bowler in their side at the expense of Bess, and using Root as a spin option.

Or playing Bess as a spin option, meaning leaving a really good pace bowler out of their side, which could feasibly happen when all our pace bowlers fit.

You were told about a hundred (how apt) reasons as to why people could hate it before it’s started.

Many of them were to do with how damaging it would be to the counties not involved but then you don’t care for county cricket in any case which you’ve admitted before several times - maybe that’s why you still don’t get it.

You right I care for club cricket first and foremost and see clubs folding and unable to field teams left right and centre and anything that might help that and increase people playing for them teams I am all for.

I appreciate you care for county cricket and respect that view.

However I was brought up on club cricket and that miles more important to me.

Think that’s we far about on the issue and should respect each others view
Although I do admit I find watching someone like Banton, Bairstow , Roy , Hales etc a hundred times more entertaining than Hameed scoring a 100 of 300 balls or whatever

No when Stokes is fit, you would have him and 3 other quicks plus a spinner. Wouldn’t need 5 fast bowlers playing. Leach/Bess/Moeen need to play imo it should be Leach

Well yeah I agree Leach should play although he not great either.

However we could have a situation hopefully in the Ashes series where Wood,Archer,Broad and Anderson all fit.

Which would mean when Stokes fit you will need to leave one of them quality bowlers out the side to field a spinner.

Which when Leach or Ali fit could agree with.

However if Bess was the only fit spinner out of them 3 would not want him in the side ahead of one of them four quality pace bowlers I mentioned.

Would play all four and have Root as the spinner, as would not want Bess ahead of one of them in the side if that makes sense.

You need a spinner, if that’s Bess then so be it. People forget he bowled really well in South Africa. You’re bowling attack is 4 bowlers who England are trying to manage their workloads accordingly. I wouldn’t want them bowling 100+ overs on a road in Australia

I totally get your general point but surely quality and skill have to taken into account otherwise you could get in some cases the fourth best bowler in the world left out of a team for a poor spinner.

I know that’s a extreme point but you get my point and especially with us having Root in the side would simply not pick Bess.
The Hundred isn’t going to alter that.
Possibly, possibly not.

What I do know is current set up is not doing anything for club cricket.

Just for comparison, Bess takes his first class wickets at 30, Root takes his at 46.

I get all the challenges with him, but he’s 23 years old. Very few spinners have discovered their game by then. He needs to develop, but he has something. And he is handy with the bat and in the field. And seems a fighter

I dont get the calls for Virdi like

he isn't a better spin bowler than Bess, plus he can't bat or field

if he didn't play for Surrey he wouldn't get mentioned.

Agree of Critchley too, good cricketer no doubt, talented lad. International spin bowler? Absolutely no chance

Test form I am talking about

we have a good spin bowler in Leach, he is international quality, can attack and defend, can bat and can field

People have amnesia like

did you not watch any of the test matches in South Africa?

do people pretend these just dont exist

its like they can only remember the last 2 games or someit.

He also bowled well last test in Sri Lanka and 1 in India

we won like 6, 7 tests in a row and he played in all but 1

He is not a test standard bowler the England set up know that hence leaving him out.

His own county didn’t even want him.

Yeah nothing against his fighting spirit or that he is handy with bat,

Simply have the imo he is not a top class spinner.

His own county didn’t want him because they have Leach. It’s rare to play with 2 spinners.

You ignored the bit about him being 23, I wonder how many spinners have more test wickets at that age in recent years...

Yeah fair enough young player but think if thought good enough they would have kept him.

Also think the first class average you quoted is massively because of the heavy turning pitches Somerset produced when they did play two spinners.

Could be wrong but would imagine his first class record at other venues no where near as good
