Sunderland railway station.

the problem with the north entrance will always be that it won’t sit directly above the platforms so you’ve effectively got to work the full length of the platform, though the city is migrating northwards now.

Was it the council that owned the line or network rail? A stupid decision to do so if plans were already underway.

I'm not sure what you mean ? As it was pre 1966 the North entrance extended down to what is currently the walkway from the Bridges to Fawcett Street then it was open to the skies above the platform till the south entrance which is about the same size as the previous south entrance used to be

I think Network Rail own the line but it's conversion to a cycleway would certainly not be funded by them.
Must be said I grew up a Ford lad and there was no plans to run the metro up it. The line was kept open as a mineral line as far as the quarry and when that was exhausted the line was taken up.

I know, the line as far as the quarry was lifted in 1976 and Pallion went in 1984. But even when the bit to Pallion closed it was proposed in the long term to open the Metro to Sunderland and I spoke to a guy maybe 30 years ago who had surveyed the Queen Alexandra Bridge to find out whether it was suitable to take the Metro (it was). When the shops were built over the open space between the south entrance and Holmeside space was left inbetween the supporting columns to allow track to go into the 2 redundant platforms.

its a railway station not your bedsit.
Need more than 18 million to sort the smell in that. Bedsit nit the station :)
I can’t wait to bump this thread when it turns out to be no different
If your bedsit is no better after 18 million being spent on it thats on you. The station on the other hand will have 26 million spent on it and we'll all be hoping its a vast improvement rather than hoping its shit just so you can bump a thread on a message board!

Appreciate that the original station was in that location but just quite a hike compared to now to get out of the station ie to travel across the full length of the platform and then Effectively through the full length of the Poundland/Littlewoods Building. They would have to somehow take control of the existing north station and Bon marche buildings and try and work out the various levels as sure as there is a reasonable level difference between HSW and market square.

Hope all you want, it will be a shithole, needs demolishing and rebuilding next to the bus station, a proper transport hub.

This man knows!

Apologies, hadn't realised you are a QS. What about the 26 million they're actually spending on it? Will that make much of a difference?
I know how these things work, 26 million sounds a lot of money to simple folk, but if you look at what the HS2 stations are having spent on them you’ll see it’s barely enough for a refit.
Don’t think you can rebuild next to the bus station due to the track geometry.
Aye it would need money spent, no chance we’ll ever get that sort of money, so it’ll continue to be a station no one uses. Chicken and egg.

I believe they are knocking down the above ground station structure and rebuilding it. The £26m won’t however cover any below ground works especially not reinstating 4 platforms.

in all fairness does Sunderland need more than 4 platforms? Probably not.

No it doesn’t, the above ground structure is desperate to be replaced so that does sound like great news, hopefully they can install gun turrets to target the undesirables that gather around it
It'll be 4 platforms once complete. I've been scathing about the station but there looks to be light at the end of the tunnel so to speak.
You’re full of shit, everyone on this thread has called you out

The wording in the article "In the longer term, this will include a more significant scheme of work to the northern entrance, delivering an impressive arrival point in the Central Business District of Riverside Sunderland." sounds more like an aspiration than a plan.
It’s in dreams and aspirations that some opportunities eventually materialise. Not having aspirations in the first place will guarantee they’ll never happen

The first phase of station redevelopment is going to be similar to what was done for Dundee station apparently. (Smart new above ground entrance and facilities). I don’t think there’s going to be any material changes at platform level.

Longer term (5-10 years) there may be development at the north end (Poundland building) which would be substantial but needs significant government money. As a city with three parliamentary seats that are ‘safe’ (it doesn’t matter for which party) I doubt that this will be at the top of any gov’s agenda.

The city needs direct connections to other northern cities to accelerate its economic development. These could be provided under the rail franchise system (currently under review but likely to be replaced by another system administered by the DfT) but those who care about the City of Sunderland need to be shouting demands for this to happen. (Nexus absolutely, 100%, won’t).

Needs the local opposition party to push more for it and be more vocal.

No they havent'. You've tried and failed. Your one of only a few being negative over this. We'd all love the station to be moved up the line a little and be 6 or 10 platforms. However this would cost billions and is unlikely ever to happen. Durham, a historic city on the ECM has only 2 platforms and a station outside their centre. We're getting part one of a plan which would transform a large section of our city. For the first time in my memory the council seem to have a plan of joined up thinking. They're linking this overall station redevelopment to work going on on high street west and Vaux which in turn links sunniside to the theature and "cultural area" as they call it.

We're not getting what we'd build if we were playing sim city but we're getting sustainable improvement which is much needed. All you seem to want to do is do everything down and threaten to bookmark and bump this thread if grand central terminal isn't build in 6 weeks. The fact is they've promised work will start in next few weeks and that current structure is coming down. Thats a huge step. Shame on you if you don't want better for Sunderland.
