The best way of describing how stupid the net spend argument is by comparing two clubs with similar historys over the past 5 seasons, Brighton and NUFC both promoted as 1st and 2nd in the championship that season
The season previous to their promotion campaigns Newcastle were in the premier league and Brighton were 3rd in the championship
Brighton spent 12m that season
NUFC spent 97m
16/17 - both teams in championship and finish 1st and 2nd
Brighton spend 8m
NUFC spend 58m ......... they also recoup 91m (sourced from our geordie friends website for consistency)
******************************************************************************************************************************************
At this stage both are premier league clubs, from only those two seasons:
However this still doesnt tell the true story of the past two seasons.
NUFC wages in 15/16 were roughly 70m so adding this figure to their transfer fees, NUFC actually spent 167m on player costs in 2015/2016 Brighton spent roughly 31m on wages add that to transfer fees, 167m vs 39m = End of season 1 comparison
***********************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************
Season both were promoted, Brigton spent 31m on player wages, NUFC spent approx 105m on wages, End of season two comparison, Brighton spend 51m NUFC spend 72m (Whilst the club obviously made a 33m profit on selling players, they were spending over 100m on player wages)
2015/2016 = NUFC spent 167m Brighton spend 39m = NUFC spent 128m more than Brighton on their squad
2016/2017 = NUFC spent 72m vs Brightons spend 39 = again NUFC spent 33m more than Brighton on their squad.
As both teams entered the premier league NUFC had spent 161m more than Brigton on transfer fees and wages. If an intellgient NUFC fan can now show that Brighton have spent much more since being in the premier league to reflect this huge deficit il agree that the net spend argument holds true but they know they cant
