Sources close to the Staveley camp have consistently claimed that a deal to buy Newcastle is not dead, but this week’s events in Italy appear to have significantly reduced the likelihood of last year’s proposed arrangement being dusted off and reoffered.



Weird. If Queen Amanda’s people said it wasn’t dead, then surely there couldn’t be any new problems?

If you honestly think Benitez is a average-to-poor manager, then you crack on. But it's clear to everybody that we were improving year on year under him. The only reason some Sunderland fans are obsessed with downplaying his ability is because they perceive his support to be over-the-top.

There is also a couple of reasons from my perspective: (i) the fact that you lauded him though he never won anything but enjoyed basking in the reflective glory of his past merits. I have never known a set of fans who enjoy reflective glory more than Newcastle fans; (ii) apologies I forget the exact time line but a pal of mine was working on his house (incredible!) and it was a pretty open secret he was going to China long before the end of the season. So the "Ashley didn't back him" was just PR as he was off to China in any case. Newcastle, being 3 hours ish away, suited him when his youngest was doing GCSE's and oldest A'levels.

Some seasons getting 45pts is enough to get top half, sometimes it isn't. Nowt you can do about it.

They're, at best, half the story.

Of course its position. If you survive one year on 36 but go down next year on 42 points, you have failed and regressed.

They're not happy with the decision to keep one of the arbitration panel and are deciding whether to appeal the case they lost last week. If they appeal it would delay the start of arbitration and hence push back any overall outcome decision on the takeover.

Ashley is only doing this as he's desperate to be seen as a willing seller. Plus it means he needn't spend money as he can say he is trying to sell so can't invest.

He's the best business in the UK and he's going nowhere. He just wants to prolong the charade

That's the point, Steve McClaren was in charge for 24 games, had fixtures against all the relegation rivals, money spent in the summer and the winter on players he wanted, and yet could only manage 24pts from 18 games. But, reading this forum, Schteve is never mentioned, the only person responsible for our relegation was Benitez, purely because the Newcastle fans liked him. It's incredibly juvenile.
