Your batting for the Ashes assuming everyone is fit

Following on from a good discussion on the bowlers. Let’s ignore the keeper for now, he bats 7 whoever it is and let’s assume doesn’t get in for batting alone

Root and Stokes obviously play but then it gets tough

Openers: 2 from Sibley, Burns, Crawley. Anyone else have a chance?
3: Crawley if he doesn’t open. Pope, Lawrence, Malan?
6: Pope, Lawrence, Malan, Bairstow?

It’s not that deep is it?

Burns needs runs this summer but not sure who could realistically come in as opener if he fails- maybe Lees has another good year for us?

Its important not to go over the top about this India tour, I honestly think the top 7 picks itselfs, we were very good for 18 months and were regularly making 400 in the 1st innings

Sibley
Burns
Crawley
Root
Stokes
Pope
Buttler (wk)

Thats our starting point, the dodgy areas are the Burns Sibley combo, with Burns making no runs, and number 6, Pope making no runs for a year

The way I see it, specifically for the Ashes, if Burns cant get runs soon, Malan is ideal for 3 on those pitches, with Crawley to ope

and if Pope doesnt improve, then Lawrence comes in

there is absolutely no argument about Buttler as firs choice wk, Foakes kept well, but he batted poorly ad his game isn't suited to batting 7, he is quite orthodox, tin hat on but I wouldnt even take him, Bairstow got a 100 last ashes and he would be my back up keeper. Buttler has been very good for a while now and we badly missed him when he went home.

No need to panic for me. There is still room for a top order batsman to have a good season to get in.

But basiczlly, Pope and Burns need runs soon, or they both get dropped.

Good post

Lawrence or Malan at 6 maybe if Pope’s form doesn’t improve. Not sure who else could open, see who does well domestically this year. Lammonby looks talented but far too soon you’d think

Whatever WK can be fucked to play in each particular game

Harsh on Crawley I know, but I just think Aus pitches are made for Malan

WK would be Butler. Roots play against spin is brilliant but don't think his last few years against seam warrant him being unmovable from 4

Personally the only change I'd make to that is swapping Lawrence for Pope but that opening partnership gives me no confidence whatsoever. I think Burns international career will be over by the time NZ series finishes and if not it'll only be because there's no one else to come in. It's been a while since our batting options were this thin.

Only thing I disagree with is Bairstow being a cert for back up. I want to see him play a lot of first class cricket and not just score a load of runs, as I'm sure he'll do that, but tighten that technique up. We've seen in the past what he's capable of when he does but since he was first dropped from the test team he only ever seems to play one day cricket and that's not helping him.

Big opportunity for people to get a boatload of runs this summer and start knocking on the door.

Malan should certainly be in consideration. I still think he was harshly dropped from the test squad.

The cupboard isn’t really jam packed so we need a break out season from someone to put themselves in the mix. Burns, Pope and Bairstow don’t inspire much confidence at the minute and although I like the look of Sibley and Crawley, they need to find consistency.

they are made for Crawley too like, great against pace bowling and off back foot

he is our nailed on 3rd batsman behind Root and Stokes

no way Sibley and Burns are ahead of him in the selectors view
