Benitez has left Dalian

my mate just texted me about it. wants him back. china doesn't count. he improved every player at the club so i asked him about delivering the worst start to a season in decades but its all about the bigger picture apparently
Ask him who he improved? I am genuinely interested.

He throws 5-10m quid around like confetti. 9.5m for Mutu, 25 games in two seasons (no idea how many starts) then loaned out. Maybe Grant Hanley, signed for c5.5m, played 10 games then discarded.

He was even worse at Liverpool but that is often forgotten due to signings of Torres, Alonso and Mascherano. See Acquilani and Dosena.

Add Joselu and others😎

He’s left his job because covid has affected his “project”
What was his project like?
Bringing bat soup to the masses???
The Fat Gammon might have gone in disgrace but his Trumpisms live on in the mouths of loads of other inadequate elderly, had their time, blokes looking for excuses and re-writing history.

I had these conversations and been banging the drum for Benitez being overated for years due to Liverpool supporting friends. On here when he was linked with us pre Newcastle, people kicked off at me, but now people can see it since he went to Newcastle.

Liverpool he was an utter disgrace! He won 2005 champions league competition, fair play but everything else he was poor.

Wasted the prime years of Steven Gerrard, him and Torres held Benitez's Liverpool together.

Remember when he wanted rid of Xabi Alonso for Gareth Barry?
Fingers crossed he returns.
Be fantastic

So now it seems inevitable amongst some of them that because he is leaving his job in China, and that he was the preferred choice by the recent Stavely mob, then it is logical that the takeover is back on and Rafa is coming home.

As straw clutching goes, that's quite impressive.

I don't understand the love Newcastle fans have for him. They were shite when he was there, played absolutely awful football - the '10 men on the 18 yard line and 8% possession' type of football in quite a few games.

He took over with about 12-14 games to go(?) and took them down, having been outside the relegation zone when he arrived and still had to play all of the other teams in the bottom 5.

He then brought them straight back up but spent nearly 100m in the Championship (some of that offset by selling Sissoko and Wijnaldum) to do it. Then spent another shitload in his first season back up, and then the gravy train dried up to be fair, and they didn't spend much in his last season.

His best (PL) season there ended with 45 points. Last season Bruce got 44, and Bruce hasn't wasted loads of money on shite - aside from the obvious Joelinton, who is absolute pony. But Saint Maximin, Jamal Lewis, Called Wilson are all seemingly reasonable buys, and Hendrick is solid if unspectacular (correct me if I'm wrong on these, Newcastle fans)

Benitez spent loads of money on the likes of Muto, Gayle, Saivet, Jacob Murphy, Daryl Murphy, Hanley, Lazaar, Atsu, Almiron, Lejeune etc. All of whom have either made a loss when sold, can't get rid of and have had loans away, and the ones that are still involved like Almiron, have had a very limited impact for the money spent.

Yet Bruce is maligned and Benitez is hailed. On paper - and having watched them under both - there's not difference.

Joelinton was not really Bruce's signing either tbf. It honestly, genuinely probably had more to do with Rafa

caulkin making excuses for him and talking about his legacy:oops:
“Legacy.”
It’s kind of weird how small his hands are.

You just can’t trust a man with small hands like that.

According to the Mags I work with, Joelinton was offered up as a potential signing during the time Benitez was there and Benitez said he didn’t want him because he was shit.

However, they secured their top-flight status in the relegation playoffs.”

Because they're a completely unbiased source

So many things wrong in this.
First of all, I'll make it clear that I don't think he'll come back, not bothered if he does, it's two years since he left and it never works out when people return to clubs.

Now onto all the stuff you've got wrong, he took over with 10 games to go. Newcastle were 19th. Had been in the bottom three since August, apart from a week in December where we climbed up to 15th for one week.

Of those 10 games, we played Leicester, Southampton, Palace, Liverpool, Man City, Swansea and Spurs who were not in the bottom 5.

You are correct he brought us straight back up but he didn't spend £100m. It was closer to half that. £57m.

Hendrick is not solid, he's shite.

He did make some terrible signings, he made some good ones too. Muto bad. Gayle was worth the money, scored the goals to get promotion and was £12m. Not PL level really but done the job he was signed for. Saivet wasn't a Benitez signing. Murphy £3m quid, scored winning goals in 3 or 4 championship games, worth the outlay for those 9 points alone. Sold for £2m after doing what he was signed for.
Jacob Murphy, been a bit of a poor signing. Never fulfilled his potential.
Hanley was signed to be a squad player in the championship, played his part.
Atsu, £5m winger. Exactly what you'd expect for that money. Loan deal in the champo made permanent.
Lejeune is a good player. Mental Bruce has tried to get rid. Lazaar, shite. Almiron, average.

It was often bad to watch under Benitez, much worse under Bruce.
