Gary Numan gets £37

As someone who grew up in the era of Numan I'm guessing older artists don't get streamed a lot and rely on sales of CDs, vinyl and royalties. His last album was very hood in my opinion.

I can see though why a lot of acts from the 80s still like to tour and do retro festivals like the ones at Herrington Park each year.

Streaming, through the major services at least, is great for the consumer but not for musicians. I know some people will buy things based on what they stream but most don't. Artists below stadium and arena fillers have increasingly had to rely on gigs and direct sales of merchandise to make a living and, with Covid-19, that source has gone.

It’s really not good

The counter challenge is that it’s not Spotify and the like making tons of money (are they even profitable yet?), it’s the distribution of income.

Would you pay £20 a month for a streaming service? I would, but plenty wouldn’t bother (which means income to be distributed falls)

I top up my Amazon with Amazon music for 8 quid a month.. going on how much music we play Amazon will be making on us comfortably as I imagine there is less than a quids worth of royalties paid out

When it comes to dividing out the money an artist earns from recording music, it always seems to be the artist that gets the least. That's nothing new of course but those who make money from the artist need to appreciate that without the artist they wouldn't make this kind of money.

Amazon are probably a slightly different beast given their infrastructure etc.

Looks like Spotify made a small profit one year, EUR 50m or so. That’s tiny relative to their revenues

other sources indicate a loss. I’d need to look at it properly
