Sri Lanka tour

day 2 washed out

so 1 day cricket, against each other, since the summer. Living in isolation in a hotel room.

I think if I see people slagging off players after low innings in this series I will explode

no way to prepare for international sport like, especially when the wickets will turn square

an impossble task, I might actually lump on Sri Lanka 2-0

Just had a look at the odds, Sri Lanka 7/2 for series win and 6/1 for 2-0, where the prices for England are 11/10 and 7/4 for series win or 2 0, so the bookies disagree with you, and think it’s far from an impossible task to win, so get on if you feel that will be the score.

Personally I agree with bookies on this one, as think we better side.

Time reporting that Bairstow will bat at 3 and Lawrence at 5

Burns
Crawley
Bairstow 😬
Root (C)
Lawrence
Buttler (W)
Woakes/Curran
Bess
Broad
Anderson
Leach

Is that the likely team? Or are they going to rotate Broad and Anderson? Imagine Root will turn his arm over a fair bit in this series too

Can’t see them playing abroad and Anderson. Should be Wood but you never know. They like taking him places but not giving him a game

Forgot about Woody - is it a risk playing as part of a 3 man pace attack? Maybe not in SL where spin will play a massive part.

Bairstow got a 100 in his last test in Sri Lanka, why woldnt he play there

After playing absolutely zero cricket, especially in extreme conditions?

Be an amazing result, one of England's best for a while if they could do that

New Zealand couldn't win there last time. Australia and South Africa got thrashed last time they toured. It is not an easy place to win

Guess the question is then, why do the bookies still have England as strong favourites? Even taking into account your valid points?

Same question to you mate, the bookies still see us as favourites despite the points you have made, I think it's personally because Sri Lanka are not as strong as previously?
Not sure I'll be betting on that, both bases covered, means I hapy with either results

Yeah there is no doubt you make some valid points, but taking everything into account, I still think we will be too strong for them.

Or they aren't very good at playing spin, same as us and the same reason why it's difficult to win in places like Bangladesh despite them not being a great side

Yeah of course, alien conditions, undercooked, are all a factor, totally agree.

But I think taking all that into account along with the difffrence in capability of both sides think we will have the edge.

I can’t call this one to be honest. Plenty of arguments either way. It’s a poor SL side, but we’re undercooked, under strength and weak against spin

side wise, I guess I don’t have issue with Bairstow at 3 for this one, but he ain’t a long term 3. It’s still him or Buttler for me. At 7

bowling, Wood has to play. Just has to.

Agree with all of that

Moeen out of the first test, I wonder if they call up one of the reserves.

FWIW, I don't think Crane and Parkinson are test class bowlers at the moment. Virdi would be the better option for me but do we really need 2 off-spinners, particularly when Root would be called upon? Would also leave a long tail.

IMO, Bairstow hasn't done enough to warrant a recall but the batting is so light that he probably has to play. The other option would be that Buttler plays as a specialist batsman and Foakes takes the gloves at either 6 or 7.

Bowling wise, 1 of Anderson, Broad and Woakes to partner Wood with the new ball with Leach and Bess the spin options. Having said that, no Stokes leaves the bowling attack light so there's a case for Woakes to play so we have a 5th bowling option and Root as the third spinner.

Tough XI to pick I think.
