The way John Cooke was dealt with was utterly appalling by Sunderland AFC so lets not have any rewriting of recent history just cos his lad has moved to the Mags. If they had an ounce of integrity and professionalism in the clubs senior management, they'd have put it right and publicly apologised well before now.

As for the lad, I thought it showed real courage and character when he stuck up for his Dad. The easy thing would be to say nothing and hope it didn't affect his own career.

I'm not in the least bit surprised he's gone up the road and I wish him well - unless he plays against SAFC or he makes the first team.

Did he stick up for his dad before he moved, or wait until he had moved?

Courage :) :) :) f***ing hell man, look the word up

We made our kit man redundant.

His son was one of our academy players. He bizarrely and publicly on twitter criticises the club. He has now signed for the mags according to OP.
Why is it bizarre that the lad chooses to declare his displeasure at his father’s shit treatment?

Do it privately. He can tell his family and friends that he doesn't like it, don't tweet about it.
Do we have a kit man now. Take it someone passed the interview.
Yes, believe it was someone already at the club. So now one man does the job that previously two did. Which is what redundancy is, which it seems to me a lot are not getting.

I don't think anyone should be untouchable when it comes to redundancies but there's a right way to go about the process and a wrong way, and everything we've heard stinks.

I don't disagree with that. Certainly think his departure should have been announced with a fitting thank you for service.

This rant shows immaturity, especially when moving from us to them. The Mags will lap it up but he'll get abuse at both clubs if he's still there in the future.
We live in rapidly changing times due to this pandemic and employers have made hundreds of thousands of staff redundant. John Cooke, as much as I like the lad was an average squad player who has done well over the years to keep that role as kitman. He will have been well paid by the club compared to the average working man. Many people give outstanding service over a long period of employment but don't receive public platitudes and a golden handshake when their time comes.
In hindsight the SAFC senior management should have dealt with it much better.

Congratulations on winning “signing the kitman’s son challenge trophy”

The airport and metro centre cups will be so proud with this latest triumph.

Dont forget the Attendance Trophy (50k yer knarr and 50k on the waiting list) and the Gravy Stain Shield.

I don't know the lad, never seen him play and he probably will never make a first team appearance. That said, there has been a bit of a rewriting of history in this thread. When the kitman was sacked there was a thread on here of people that were pissed off about it and defending the lads stance and thanking him for highlighting the shambles your club was in. Now he has left he was an idiot for doing so etc. Seems odd.

I don’t know the full story with John Cooke but it looks from the information in the public domain, that the club have treated him disgustingly.

That said, with all due respect, his young’un can fuck right off. Sign for the scum and you can get fucked. I hope he has a decent career at Gateshead or South Shields in a few seasons.

This level of salt is unreal 🤣 did you feel the same about Clark and Bracewell etc

Seriously.. lessons in etymology aren't something I'll be coming to you for, I promise.

The way Cookie was treated was disgusting by any standards. It shows very poor ethics and appreciation for staff.... that should be pretty obvious to anyone.

As regards his son, I work with young people and there aren't that many who would go out on a limb - certainly not when they have dreams of cutting it as a professional footballer - who would publicly criticise the club for whom they play. (Nb: Reminder - he did that whilst still AT Sunderland AFC).

So, I'll say it again - that took courage and character. Good luck to the lad - he's prepared to stand up for what he believes is right - I hope he does well (preferably at somewhere other than the Mags, obviously).
