Oxford vaccine

The chances of under 40’s dying from Covid are very small though, I personally think it’s quite cheeky to expect them, and I include myself in that, to keep lives on hold until the vaccine eventually rocks up for them, yet it’ll be the under 40’s who will bare the brunt in terms of tax rises, austerity and loss of employment. I’m presuming you’ll need a vaccine passport or some other monstrosity to have ensuring close to a normal life, so the healthy will wait the longest for that. When furlough ends on March 30th and the economic chickens come home to roost, it will disproportionately impact upon the under 40’s.
Jesus, cry me a river. You’ve had to stay in a bit to save a few peoples lives. Do you really want to be first in line for a vaccine? It’s a good day today after a positive few weeks. Try and see the positive side of things.

I just fear the vaccine will be used as a political tool, which will be awful.
I wouldn't call it 'quite cheeky' to ask under 40's to miss a few trips to the pub etc in order to help save lives personally.

I also think the impact of all the expenditure from things such as furlough will hit all age brackets. You only need to see the public sector pay freezes which will hit many, and many of them will be over 40 I'm sure.

It's a time when we all need to realise the severity of what's happened and is not yet over.
We will all have paid a price, sadly some more than others.
Haven’t academic studies shown it’ll impact younger people more?
It's cruel to have people in care homes communicating with their families through the window but it happens regardless. It being cruel to do so would have been much less of a factor in the decision not to shield everyone who needed shielding than something like it being pretty much unworkable.
I know. I lost a family member and didn’t see them in their last 6 months of life.
They've said everyone who wants one can have one. Due to the volumes of people, some will have to wait a little while as naturally they'll start with the most vulnerable and frontline workers. It'll be a short time, not years though.
That’s fine, but I begrudge having to carry an ID of sorts to say I’ve had one. I think it would be grossly unfair.

Why? I have ID saying I'm allowed to drive my car and some other ID saying I'm allowed to travel abroad. My sons have ID to prove they're old enough to buy alcohol. It's no big deal having ID to say you're vaccinated for travelling, leisure etc.

If I went on my GP website now, I could print off a list of all the vaccinations I've ever had. Having another line added onto the bottom of the list isn't really worth worrying about.
Just on the BBC.
Young lady who has worked on the Oxford vaccine from the start. Her family must be so proud. Her name is Maheshi Ramasamy. Fantastic day for the UK.

Love stuff like this. I hope afterwards their stories encourage more girls into STEM subjects for education then careers.

I can understand it for international travel but in no other domain. I’m naturally an opponent of ID anyway. When Labour advocated bringing in a universal national ID card it’s the closest I’ve been to deserting them for another party.

Hard to believe it could be much worse.

COVID is child's play compared to it's bigger brothers, SARS and MERS.

Within identified cases, approximately 30% to 40% of MERS patients die - though it is worth mentioning that cases are few and far between and have occurred in settings with limited surveillance and advanced healthcare capacity.

Hopefully we learn from this and act quicker and harder next time, because there will be a next time.
It could easily be worse.

I’ve lost one relative through this and haven’t seen my close family in any real meaningful way since March.

If kids were dying or people were bleeding from their eyes like Ebola I’d love to see the reaction of some people on here.

I wanted to like this for the third sentence, but that didn't feel right. Sorry for your loss.

This sounds like a typical English way of announcing things. If a small dose followed by a larger dose is 90% then let’s announce 90%.
It depends on how the study has been set up as you do a trial with a specific question in mind ie do 2 full doses protect against Covid so the majority of the study will be given 2 full doses and the stats to prove this isnt a chance finding are based on that.

If they also do a smaller set of people with the half dose first it may be the trial is underpowered (not enough people studied) to prove that this isnt just a chance result.

Either way its fantastic news

I'm not going to argue but clearly there are diseases which are worse but Covid-19 will be worse in terms of deaths.

I’m just sceptical as to the swiftness of the situation, 3 weeks ago you’d be forgiven for thinking a vaccine won’t ever come, now talk of a matter of weeks before it gets administered. Guess that’s what this has done to me psychologically.

They weren't gonna say anything for sure in case worst case scenario, but they have been pretty confident

the Oxford once can be chilled in a fridge and distributed using the existing network that already exists, thats a massive plus, I'd be amazed if by end of March everyone who wants one hasn't had one

Its a final push before the rest of your lives like

We will see. I’m expecting the ‘goalposts’ to change once again.

If it's any consolation, the flu clinics are run at speed. It's literally in, stab, out! They can get through lots of people in each session.

At our GP, they set up lanes in reception. You check in and get sent to a lane where you take your coat off and get your arm ready. You forward and the nurse checks your details and injects you. Then you move away to sort your coat out etc. It's much quicker than normal routine appointments with people going into the nurses room.
