Absolutely, but hard to replicate unless you have money and connections. Their catchment area is fiercely competitive. The north-east only really has Newcastle and Middlesbrough. Boro have a good reputation for actually blooding players, and that will persist under Jonathan Woodgate. Newcastle, less so, although I'd bet they're holding the Longstaff brothers up to every parent they speak to.

The big question now is what do those in charge at Sunderland want the reputation/identity to be. Ethan Robson, Bali Mumba, and Denver Hume are a decent set of success stories, to varying degrees, but the real big names may have already left. If I'm a parent I'd ask why do I need to go to Sunderland if my boy is good enough for those clubs?

That’ll be the Longstaffs that won’t sign a new contract? Either the club is short changing them or they are mercenary little twats both kinda indicative of modern day football.

I truly believe that clubs will start to follow the Huddersfield and Brentford solution and not try and compete at a under 16 level and below.

Willis, big john, Maguire, Gooch, hume
BJ and Maguire wouldn’t go for more than £250k in today’s market.

The goalie has never been sold for a few in his whole career and Maguire last few was 8 years ago (£284K). Wills has had 1 season outside the 3rd division in how whole career, so doubtful any Championship team will be knocking our door down for him either.

Gooch and 09 probably would, not so sure about Hume, as he hasn’t done a great deal either and certainly hasn’t done anything to suggest he could play in a higher league

That's not the point. They're Premier League footballers. Whether they sign a new deal or leave, they're going to make a lot of money and be set for life most likely. If you're a parent that's sort of the end goal, to get them playing in the top league regularly. The younger one went from a fringe player who was doing well in the U23s to scoring twice against Manchester United. If I had little Joey Smith and his parents in front of me, I'd be telling them look how we nurtured and promoted those two players. If you look at the academy landscape now, more players are leaving the big clubs at a young age after they feel they've maxed out their academy development. Jadon Sancho being the most obvious example. That's where Sunderland need to be on it and not only trying to hoover up those players but also convincing the current crop that this club is the one that can help them.

FWIW, I can see some teams binning off their academy. I can also see some teams starting to realise it for what it is, which is a great avenue to save money and foster a connection with your fans. You give so much more rope to a local lad than you do an outsider under-performing. There's a tipping point for that too, but you get the point.

Oh I agree with you, The point I was making is there is a very real frequency of clubs trying to short change their academy produced young pros. Is it any wonder they have their heads turned?

Have they “lived the dream”? Certainly. Can they be held up as poster boys? Yup. Are they being paid anywhere near the recruited comparable players? Not a chance.

How do you actually envisage that conversation going exactly? No, don't join the significantly bigger club now, stay here and kick about in League one and then potentially move to Hull like Honeyman did. If he is a real talent he will move on anyway just like Henderson and Pickford did without giving it a seconds thought. This is the reality of youth development. I don't get why ppl are up in arms about it.
He'll move on just like Lewis Gibson did

No, and that's something I think may change in the years to come.

I do wonder if, as a sport, we'll move away from the inflated fees across the board and to a more Americanised approach with player trades and what have you.

The FA looked at setting up regional centres many moons ago for youth development and maybe a regional draft ala US Sports could have been attached to that.

Would never work though as top teams would want to stockpile talent.

Another young lad we could lose.

Let's hope we are serious about holding onto our young lads now and not just happy to cash in

Pointless worrying about it, absolutely nothing safc can do about it.

This strategy of letting our better younger players go to the likes of Man United and Arsenal and replacing them with players from Hartlepool is an interesting one.
