They've sung it since the first Sunday game there, when they were very much a novelty; clubs weren't allowed to charge gate money, and you had to by a 4 page programme on the turnstile (which just happened to cost the same as the gate money would have). Someone decided they ought to sung a hymn, as it was a Sunday, and that was the one they chose. I think they won, and a tradition was started - they've sung it ever since.
