Was Ken Barrington, who retired in 1968...
How come ? is it because of conditions or just that our batsmen are not that great ??

My favourite ever batsmen, he was just so classy, was absolutely gutted when he was dropped for ashes 05 for pietersen tho it did prove to be the correct decision, it probably impacted on my dislike for pietersen which grew as he became more and more a tiresome knacker
Thorpe could have played in 2005 ahead of Bell, who had a pretty torrid series. Pietersen is as always going to play and clearly should have done

I didn’t really know the ins and outs of the decision til recently and Thorpe had personal problems and a problem with his back tho he had just toured in the winter and performed well so was in contention,

pietersens form in one dayers and England’s general all round more aggressive approach tipped the scales in KPS favour, even still at the time picking someone who is clearly South African and shouldn’t even be considered pissed me off!

I know it’s the rules you can qualify thru playing in country for 5 years but it’s not right in my opinion and it hasn’t changed for years

I think Thorpe - rightly or wrongly - was seen as one of the old guard who had lost to the Aussies time and again. I think we wanted a fresh approach.

Averages are overrated. Anyone can use averages to pick a side.

Was Tendulkar a better player than Mark Lathwell? I think not
Yes he was but was Atherton a better batsman than David Lloyd and Gary Ballance and at least as good as Nasser Hussain. Was Ian Botham a better test match batsman than Ben Foakes. Jimmy Anderson mustn’t be better than Abbas either because trst match averages say otherwise.

Not counting 'not out' innings in the calculation has always seemed to me to be an awkward way of compiling the stats.
