An away game at Chester-le-street while Pakistan use Derby as a training base.

Derby top the group and appear to be going very well with bat and ball - which as we know, we can only dream of currently.

BUT, this is just the sort of game I can see us winning - as of course, it was last year; after a four defeats in a row start to the Championship season we beat this lot at our place.

Expect (and hope to the heavens) to see Rushworth back from his knee injury.

Much will be made with regards selection and of the form (or lack thereof) of messrs Steel and Dickson. Again, I’ll stick with my view from last week that 5 innings isn’t enough ‘failure time’. That said, I can see Steel making way, although who for is anyone’s guess. New signing Dickson will play all 5 games in my opinion though, unlikely that they change anything at the opener slot given the commitment the club made to signing him in the first place.

Lees appears to be going very well despite the shambles around him (Bedingham too can be excused any criticism), if only we had one more in the top order who showed his grit and determination.

I’d like to see us bowl first to see if that brings about any change in fortune. From watching the stream I’ve felt that Day 1, with the first morning especially, has been the hardest time to bat. It would be good to see how our bowlers fare with some assistance and a fresh wicket - then similarly how our batsmen cope with what I’d hope would be a small first innings total.

Lees
Dickson
Steel (is there really anyone else?!)
Bedingham
Harte
Burnham
Eckersley
Raine
Carse
Potts
Rushworth

The bowling lineup is pending fitness, but I expect Coughlin gets a rest and Potts is due another go according to my reading of the rotation system.

I’d be tempted to bring Sol Bell in for Steel, but I’m not sure how ready he is to bat 3. Nobody else in the squad truly deserves a go, but Jones appears most ‘suited’ given his second eleven appearances to bat up there.

From the current lineup I would think Harte is our best option to move up if a newcomer is to be slotted in lower down, he’s batted 3 before, but he seems happy down at 5 and he’s had success there in recent years - not to mention this season, if atleast you consider he’s had a couple of 30’s amidst a gaggle of failures around him.

Ha’way Durham!

The poor batting will get most attention and criticism but I also think we have been out bowled in all 3 matched so far which is a bigger surprise than the batting deficiencies. Yes it hasn't helped that in the first two matches the skipper wins the toss and decided to bat at the Riverside but the bowling has looked very one dimensional.

The bowling is one dimensional but in seam friendly conditions that's not necessarily a bad thing. Carse's extra pace is nullified by the conditions but I'd retain him but replace Coughlin with Potts.
Jones has been called up apparently, replacing Steel I assume. I'd promote Harte to 3 and bat Jones at 5.
Hope if Eckersley wins toss he's learnt from past errors.

You’re right. It seems mainly that we don’t know our best lineup, or the order in which they bowl.

I think I’m right in saying 5 lads have shared the new ball in 3 games so far.

Rushworth will likely go down as our greatest ever, but at present he doesn’t have a strike bowling partner - we’ve never properly found one since Onions left.

I’d like to see Carse trusted with the new ball - I see many similarities in him with Harmison and I’d rather see him open up with a 4/5 over blast and a hard ball than coming on first or second change. From what I’ve seen and heard he’s genuinely Fast and that’s still a very valuable commodity at this level.

In my minds eye I’ve got Rushy and Carse opening up, with Raine and Coughlin coming on afterwards.

If Rushy is available he comes back in he is to important with the new ball. I can't knock Salisbury because he is an honest toiler but really Potts and Carse should be good enough and consistent enough to be chosen ahead of him.
I more see Raine and Coughlin as all rounders and the change bowlers to be at their most effective.

If you look at the squad selected for the 20/20 game at Hetton Lyons tonight it gives you clues to Saturday's team.
Raine and Cameron Steel are playing, so I guess they are not playing tomorrow.
Also, Jones, Poynter and Potts are not playing, so will be in the Saturday squad.
Looks like a swap, C Steel out and Jones in.
Poynter could come in, allowing Eckersley to give up the gloves and move up the order ?

Poynter is terrible

eckersley hasn't really battered much better than anyone in fairness.

it's an odd one as if we were really depending on extravagant swing for our wickets you could make the excuse of the saliva thing but i don't think that's the case

Good spot badger 55. Certainly Jones and Potts deserve promotion for recent performances, Poytner because he is a mate of Franklin.
Squad vs Derbyshire (22-25 August)
Squad: Alex Lees, Sean Dickson, Michael Jones, David Bedingham, Gareth Harte, Stuart Poynter, Ned Eckersley (c,wk), Brydon Carse, Paul Coughlin, Ben Raine, Matthew Potts, Matthew Salisbury, Chris Rushworth

Poynter to play as a specialist batsmen. Burnham doesn't appear to be playing tonight either.

I didn't think Poynter could play now Ireland are a test side. Has he given up the chance to play for them? Or did something happen that I missed?
