Jonathon Wilson has once more surpassed himself with this haunting piece about his mother’s descent into dementia, Gibbs’ two seasons at Whitburn and losing his links to his hometown

As someone who is a few year younger than him but grew up in the same area, attending the same schools and playing at Whitburn, it is a hauntingly emotional read, albeit a very long one

One of the most emotive pieces I’ve seen. I don’t think you get too many as bright as him become sports writers, and it shows in his writing.
 
Lance was looked after at Roker Park by Johnny Watters for his injuries - as were other lads from Whitburn, Wearmouth and Sudnerland. The Alders were great friends of Johnny especially their father.

I was lucky enough to have a couple of pints with him occassionally.

Got told years ago he drank with cloughy......in fact I may have read it in Cloughs book

When I was at Whitburn in the 90s I recall an older bloke saying that Gibbs caused a scandal by dragging a few hookers along to his benefit game

He used to drink with Harry Hooper. He said he was happy Alan Brown had gone as - "Mr Brown he did not like me being with Harry."
