Jack Burnham: The Resurrection

Averaging under 30

Tempered with having to play half of his games at CLS.
No sorry that doesn't mean you are a quality county batsmen. That probably worked out an 1 century a season and 500 runs.

I’m not interested in arguing the semantics with you, it’s futile, but you can’t dismiss the all-rounder batting talent whilst trying to make the point that we don’t produce quality batsmen......

England’s best batsman currently is one of our own.

Iam not dismissing them that's why I mentioned them. It was the different roles players can have in a side and comparing it to Burnham.
I would imagine you saw even more than me of Burnham in his mid teens and as I have said I thought he looked s cracking prospect as an all rounder. Sadly for whatever reason that has not happened for Burnham and it appears he had to make it purely as a batsmen.

You are happy with someone averaging 30 don't complain if we get low scores

Lot's of clichés in there …. I'll add my own "the proof of the pudding ……..".

This one was an eye-opener though "I've lost family and friends as a result of my actions." - Huh? There were deaths???

But I hope he gets back to where he was and better, lot's of us expected good things from him for Durham and no doubt we'll be chuffed to bits if he can do it for Durham.

I've watched the video clip of him speaking. Saying the words is one thing but the way he sees it is impressive, he looks more mature and it looks like he means it all. So, on his side 100%.

The bit I particularly liked was while working in 2018, he was not getting home till five at night!!!

Not getting home till 5 right through the winter!

Defending people that average 30 though

It’s mainly playing devils advocate - long serving members of this forum will attest I was never his biggest fan - but you cannot (and should not ever) underestimate the contribution he made to the cause.

His service to the club should always be appreciated. He played a lot of cricket for Durham during our golden era of success and can be remembered as having played a big part.

It was often noted that he seemed to be more comfortable playing away from CLS, but he’s not the only one who that was true of.

It’s always been worth considering the ‘Riverside Factor’ when looking at career records of all the players who played half their cricket here.

For a reference point though, what would you consider an acceptable figure for a ‘quality’ batsman?

Well I made the quote "quality batsmen". For me that is someone who's place is cemented in the team due to their run scoring. Another thing would be other counties would sign him up if they could.
I don't that Muchall ever cracked it at first class level at best he was a journeyman who was an excellent team man and probably at his most effective as the 2nd team Captain and their senior pro.

Well, if nearly 8,000 FC runs, 14 centuries and Three County Championship medals is what you call a journeyman - I wish that’s all I’d ever amounted to

He played 163 FC matches (and 150 List A games) in 14 seasons, not sure what cement you use marra ;)

Why keep saying 14 centuries as if it's good

Well you played as much as him in the championship title wins of 2008 and 2013 because like you he didn't make one appearance. Captained the 2nds now and again though.
If you see him in the bar at Brandon C.C. ask him if you can have a look at his championship medals from those 2 years.
To be fair in 2009 he made 11 appearances in the championship winning side and scored 497 runs at 33. So it sounds that year he was the reserve batsmen and did a decent job when he was selected.

Spot on about Muchall. Overall a good one to have around.

Apart from not playing in two of the championship wins
I wasn't so much on about that. I was more on about him as a professional. One of the very best & a very well respected team member. It's a team effort whether that's in the 1sts, 2nds or on the training ground. Likes of Muchall will have helped many

One of the most decent likeable Durham players I have met. But never a quality county batsmen and that was the point.
