End of an era

All my adult life Sunday morning meant getting the Sunday Sun, and quickly turning to the Cricket section, reading all the scorecards, analysing who got runs, wickets etc,etc. Then, checking the league tables seeing which teams were doing well and which ones were not doing so well.
I know everything is on computer these days, BUT, it wasn't the same as the Sunday Sun !
Got the paper today and noticed 11 full pages of, almost, non existent football. The writing was on the wall !
Eventually found, approximately, 1/4 of a page with a short write up of some Cricket games.
Then, yes I did, checking the computer, found a Twitter feed saying that the "REGIONAL PRESS " had informed cricket leagues that they would no longer print cricket scorecards !!
WHAT ???
Sad decision, but now decided to stop buying the Sunday Sun. End of an era !

It was part of my childhood, as a kid 10/11 (sad I know:D) just to write some of the scores in my own book keeping a record of players who used to score fifties and hundreds, then as you got older every Sunday would be looking through the scores, even when we used to go on holiday to Scarborough we would still look for the Sunday Sun to read the scores.

It is certainly the end of the era, following on from the end of the football Echo on a Saturday night waiting it to be delivered.

Technology not always progress!

Same with The Yorkshire Post mate.
The Monday Sports section had every league in it and you could catch up with pros and players performances you had played with and against who had moved to some of the other leagues.
Now it's a dredge through the various play cricket sites to get hold of the gen.

Yes you are totally correct. The Sunday Sun when I was at home had a full breakdown. I remembr Micky Brown who was the reporter for the Seaham area would travael around the clubs getting the latest score for the Football Echo. Full breakdown - not line scores - 1st and 2nd teams.

The Monday Sports in Yorkshire was just as good with reports of the games. I do trawl through the Leagues but it takes so long. Radio Leeds used to cover League cricket live across Yorkshire with Ian Chappell hosting it. It was a brillaint cricket programme - reporters at grounds giving updates. I got mentioned but not very often!

Pre internet and mobile days the public phone in Horden cricket club would never stop ringing with various people wanting to know the latest score.

That league needs to toughen up then.
All the leagues round here have a time limit for uploading scorecards to PC.
Fines and points deductions for those who flout.
 
I think it was the same thing all across Britain. In Scotland, the Sunday Post used to have in-depth scores and reports on various county and regional leagues. In Ulster, too, there was a large section in most of the Sundays featuring mainly local and West of Scotland leagues.

Nowadays you're lucky to get half a page of county or one-dayers or T20 games. All about England and not a lot else.

It was always much more engaging to read of a club deliberately wasting over after over, not bothering to take runs, just to stop the bowling side having any chance of chasing a win.

We don't ask for much. Once a week, give us something worth reading, about the narional summer sport, at club level.

Only one - and that is because he failed to attend the disciplinary hearing. Just packed in cricket. They were right about him. Quite a few get bans during the season but I haven't heard of any this season - yet! I have not reported anyone in the years I have umpired - just told them to calm down or "Skipper - have a word!" usually works.
 
Sad times, like many have said, its removed the last reason to by the Sunday Sun. Shame, but miss checking the scores.

For all of the people twisting about it how many were still buying these papers though? I bet a few bemoaning it had already switched to Play Cricket and that’s the issue they had.
 
Only ever bought it in the cricket season love a look at play cricket now soon as I get in on a Saturday night also some clubs like ours update ball by ball so you can watch both games together.

The benefit of having excellent scores

Every week without fail. Always brilliant for local cricket and football in the Winter. Both now gone, so little point in buying it.
