Until recently (2018) there was no VAT, then it went to 5% and was recently tripled to 15%.

They have quite a complex "social security system" but I know that civil servants and military personnel used to receive 1000 SAR per month (just less than 300 quid) as a cost of living allowance, and it was recently abolished. I come across many Saudi students who come for several years, fully funded with their families. The Saudi's who attend courses I run travel business class and stay in the best hotels. Being a Saudi citizen brings a lot of benefits, but for how long can the lavish benefits continue?

I had to google as I couldn't remember the breakeven oil price but it is reported here as 85 USD/bbl -

- I am no expert on oil extraction but believe Saudi oil is easy to get at so the profit is huge. It's currently around 40 USD/bbl...

I only really come across middle/upper management from Saudi companies and, from what I can tell, they have a very comfortable life. The majority I meet also love football but seem to follow Italian and Spanish clubs more than English clubs though Liverpool, courtesy of Salah, is increasingly popular.

Yeah that tallies with what an old guy told me who worked out there for years. He loved the country and the people and spoke fluent arabic. So, it’s not a bad place apart from the sharia law thing which is slowly changing? As for the beheadings, can we agree that it is their form of capital punishment, carried out by state appointed executioners. No one is running around decapitating people willy nilly?
Dont agree with it, especially as it seems to be used for minor crimes. Do they still cut hands off for theft or did that stop?

if the take over goes through do you think large quantities of Saudis will become Newcastle fans as the club will be owned by the state?

Something doing the rounds on twitter is that BEIN in cancelled in KSA and Saudi Arabia have paid a 10m Riyal fine (c£2m). Could be linked, could be something entirely separate.

Way I read it, the Qataris had to pay the fine due to the antics they got up to with the Euro broadcasts
 
I wonder who will have the biggest melt down, NUFC fans if it falls through or Sunderland fans if it goes through :lol:

And if they're doing their own broadcasts, they're likely to crack down on piracy as it's now their own pocket that'd be hit by it. What I said ages ago, them having broadcast rights was the best solution for all parties (except BEIN).

althoguh saying that, if BEIN maintain rights for all other countries in the MENA region, they'll still have a decent area to cover, right?
