My point is that the bloke playing in the Welsh League in 93-94 won it on merit according to their rules at the time

I don't think the award was actually given at the time as there was a gap when no awards were given. But yes that chap would have scored the most goals that season and I think it was allocated in hindsightMy point is that the bloke playing for the Welsh League in 93-94 won it on merit according to their rules at the time
would the baldy geordie have won it before the criteria changed? I hope he wouldn’t have
He would have been in with a shout when he scored 31, 34, 31 for Blackburnwould the baldy geordie have won it before the criteria changed? I hope he wouldn’t have
Juan Antonio Pizzi got the same amount of goals (31) in la Liga in 95/96Applying the criteria to 93/94 when Cole was PL golden boot winner, then the two following seasons when Shearer got over 30 again (before the modern criteria came in) who would've won it? Anybody in the other big 4 leagues get more than Cole or Shearer?
He would have been in with a shout when he scored 31, 34, 31 for Blackburn
Edit: I see Cole would have won in 93/94
Juan Antonio Pizzi got the same amount of goals (31) in la Liga in 95/96
I think Shearer would have won it outright in 94/95 when he got 34 for Blackburn in their title winning season were it under the rules it is now
Changing the topic slightly, because of the winners of the Welsh Cup qualifying for Europe, some very average players will have quite a few European appearances on their cv.Not many goals I would have thought.
Strangely the Eredivisie seems to actually be a x2 league judging by Machlas' 97/98 seasonYeah, I've just been skimming through the big 5 leagues couldn't see anybody near Shearer in 94/95, but 95/96 he's tied with Pizzi, 31 each meaning worth 62 points.
Shearer done it in 35 games, Pizzi done it in 41.
Ronaldo got 30 that season for PSV but I'm thinking only worth 1.5 anyway.
Some right dodgy winners in the list when using the old format. Winners from Georgia etc. Definitely adds more value when they changed it to represent the quality of the league more effectively
Look at the European Cup in the 70s. The likes of Linfield and Crusaders getting beat in the first round by double figures on aggregate with no goals scored. Absolute joke

Talk about scraping the barrel to look for a negativeAnd only on 3 occasions in the past 52 awards has it taken fewer goals to win it. Doesn't detract from his achievement mind.
He's not looking to detract from the achievement though....Talk about scraping the barrel to look for a negative
Dutch football was strong during the 90s. They had clubs getting to champions league/uefa cup finals and their best players hung around longer before going to the so called ‘big’ leagues.Strangely the Eredivisie seems to actually be a x2 league judging by Machlas' 97/98 season

You’re right. I though Feyenoord won the UEFA cup in 1998 but it was 2002.I agree dutch football was stronger in the 90s. However, I'm just gonna be pedantic here. Ajax were the only dutch team in a Euro final in the 90s. Won the uefa in 92, CL in 95 and CL runners up in 96.
When you say clubs, it was only Ajax.

Won’t be a bargain for top players and certainly won’t when they know that their loaded and need to buy!You little bugger you! Ashley isn't walking away from this - values of players and teams is plummeting - his price is effectively selling at the top of the market. If they start haggling, expecting a bargain, then he may walk. If they are as ambitious as our mag friends think they will get in asap as there will be huge bargains in the summer window.
Surely the same value will continue to fall, irrespective of owners? Appreciate the new ones have deeper pockets but little return is still little returnYou little bugger you! Well they’re buying now will be worth less as cause if players goes down adding to that the uncertainty of what last going on. If it’s bad for Mike it’ll be bad for them. Not sure what you mean?
Most premier league teams run at a loss and with a fall in match day revenue and TV money, some will need to sell to survive and cut wages bills. It will be a buyers market. Under normal circumstances teams with new money get taken to the cleaners (see Man City) but this is a different environment. Even more so, due to Ashley's years of austerity, they have huge head room for FFP and can spend big (unfortunately). Let's just hope they start haggling and get cold feet.
