It's a huge moral argument, and not one that I can honestly claim to know the answer to. And you're right, governments do look the other way - ours, the US, whoever - because they care more about money. You care more about football. And I get that, to some extent - but sportwashing is real. That's why they're here. PIF (not Staveley. She's just a front: a savvy business woman, joining dots to get rich quick) are buying NUFC for no other reason than to wash their image.

This is a deliberate attempt to deflect from absolutely appalling, daily atrocities.

Yemen, state-sponsored murder, the trashing of human-rights, gay rights (looking forward to some awkward looks on rainbow laces day), women's rights, I mean, it just goes on and on.

I just don't think you can be on here saying, oh, you lot didn't care, what about Sheff United, Chelsea, etc etc, when, for me, that's not the issue - that's just deflecting from saying, "I know it goes on. And I don't care. Top eight is more important" - which, I guess, is a bloody (no pun intended) hard statement to make. But your fight isn't with us, is it? It's with your own conscience.

And what does sit a little awkwardly in this, is you did have a conscience when it came to Fat Mike. You (the fan base) not only protested him, you protested his company, and had issues with his ways of working. Well, when you weren't winning, anyway. And the two aren't anywhere near comparable.

Now, would Sunderland fans suddenly gain a conscience if it was being thrown billions? The overwhelming vast majority, no, absolutely not. And I don't know what you'd do even if you did listen to what's "right". But you do need to stop pointing at other people - Sheff United, Labour, etc - as justification for what's happening. The Saudi stink is yours now, and will always be there - but maybe you won't notice/care if you sign Kylian Mbappe.

They absolutely are as wealthy as they claim to be. Unfathomable wealth. The head of the PIF has a painting worth more than Newcastle United.

Cracking Post sir. None of which can be argued.
What do we do about it, stop going is the correct answer however will we, would you?
I guess these are the times when talk about what is right actually effects the average bloke in England. Stop going follows the morally right path. It will not effect the regime one iota. All that happens is by following the moral path you miss out on the game you love. A tough choice with no positive outcome for the normal supporter.

I guess this answers my previous question. Some of your previous posts had lead me to think that you were a little more educated than you’re average Mag (it’s a low threshold) but obviously not. You genuinely think that there is nothing wrong with an individual of Bin Salman’s track record taking over your football club and are dismissing the fact even Amnesty international see fit to get involved as trivial.
I’m desperate for any kind of success at SAFC but not at any cost.

I have never said i don't think there is anything wrong with his track record, if i'm honest I don't know a great deal about him. I have heard he is classed as someone that is progressive over their but i obviously don't agree with bumping of journalists and other things i am aware that go on in Islamic countries.

What is it that you suggest i should do should this take over happen, stop supporting my club?

Saudi Arabia is trying to modernise, to become more moderate by our standards, to move away from being totally oil dependent by making investments in western business. Is it your argument that the people of the west should rally and block them from investing in the west and keep them locked in Arabia were people with their human rights record belong?

The Times this morning:

Block Saudis' Newcastle bid, says TV giant beIN Sports

English football’s biggest overseas broadcast partner has written to the Premier League and its 20 clubs urging them to block the sale of Newcastle United to a Saudi-led consortium.

Newcastle’s owner Mike Ashley has agreed a £300 million sale to a consortium backed by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, but beIN Sport has warned that the country’s involvement in piracy of Premier League matches threatens the future prosperity of the game’s richest league.

The move by beIN presents a significant threat to the takeover being approved by the Premier League, given that its three-year TV deal is worth £500 million to the 20 clubs.

The letter, which has been seen by The Times, points out that the Premier League has made unsuccessful attempts to take legal action in Saudi Arabia against the state-owned Arab satellite provider, which transmits top-flight matches on the pirate channel beoutQ.

Qatar-based beIN Sport has also written separately to the Premier League’s chief executive Richard Masters — Qatar is involved in a bitter political conflict with its Saudi neighbour.

Yousef Al-Obaidly, the chief executive of the beIN media group, says in the letters: “The danger of allowing the acquisition of a controlling or material interest (whether acquired directly or indirectly) in a major Premier League club by what is effectively the Saudi Arabian government cannot be ignored given the country’s past and continuing illegal actions and their direct impact upon the commercial interests of the Premier League, its member clubs, its broadcast partners and football in general.
“As a longstanding partner and huge investor in the Premier League, we urge you to consider carefully all the implications of doing so.”
The letters refer to the “notorious and industrial-scale theft of the Premier League’s intellectual property by Saudi Arabia” and implies that if the takeover is approved then it may affect future broadcast deals.
“It is no exaggeration to say that the future economic model of football is at stake,” the letter to the clubs concludes.
The letter to Masters adds: “The apparent involvement in the acquisition of NUFC of the principal sovereign wealth fund of the very country that for nearly three years has openly facilitated the operation of the largest and most sophisticated sports piracy service ever seen — beoutQ — greatly concerns us.”
Under the takeover deal, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) — controlled by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman — would acquire an 80 per cent stake, with Amanda Staveley’s PCP Capital Partners taking 10 per cent.
The Reuben brothers, Simon and David, who are said to be millionaire property developers, would acquire the other 10 per cent.

I'll give you an honest answer assuming you're wanting a genuine discussion and not just trying to start an argument.

If I could choose an owner to buy my club he would be worth trillions, have a past that is whiter than the driven snow, have a moral compass that is on par with Jesus Christ and his only interest in the purchase was to make the club great and the fans happy.
Sadly I do not get to choose the owner of my club or get any input.
Will I be happy if the club is bought, absolutely.
Will I be happy if they invest significantly in the club, absolutely.
Will i be happy if they invest in the area, indeed i will.
Will I still support my team, absolutely.
I will be genuinely happy they bought my club as long as they do right by my club.

Do i think its bad when a country has someone murdered, depends on the circumstances but in this particular situation of the journalist I would say yes that was appalling.
Do i like the way they live their lives in Islamic countries, their views on gays, women's rights, general freedoms etc. i would say i personally don't agree with it but it's not for myself to force my morals on them. If they wish to follow the dictates of Sharia law in their own country then that is up to them.

I can dislike somethings that people do and like other things they do. Because someone does things i don't agree with i don't have to universally hate everything they do.

Is it hypocritical for a Newcastle fan to bleat on about Ashley and Zero hours contracts and not do the same with these new potential owners? well obviously yes.
That's just life though when your trying to attack someone you look round for ammunition. Nobody from the Newcastle Side of things is trying to attack these new potential owners so they wont. Should they turn out to be nightmare owners then the Newcastle fans will look round for things to hit them with and with their human rights record their will be no shortage of sticks to hit them with.
The most sensible common sense and reasoned response to all this hyperbole and jealousy masquerading as moral indignation.

Thank you for taking the time to intelligently spell out the truths which the majority of football fans of any club would agree to. Whether they care to admit it or not.

You will invite lots of spiteful criticism (as I will for agreeing) in far shorter less reasoned and cerebral responses.

Again, thank you I enjoyed the read.

Ha!
Please block the sale as those nasty Saudi's have been ripping us law abiding folk off and they won't stop.
If only this was the biggest reason to question our potential new owners.

As I understand, it is a wealth fund that is buying Newcastle not a wealthy individual. The quickest way to reduce wealth would be to buy a PL club and try to break into the elite. The whole point of a wealth fund is to generate more wealth. A wealth fund would have to invest in as many areas as possible to diversify risk. Investing in football represents a diversification of risk. On that basis the Saudi guys would manage Newcastle on the Ashley model and not that of the early Abranovich Chelsea or current Man City models.
This takeover may not turn out as the Geordie nation expects .....
They aren't buying them to make money though, they're doing it to clean their image. For the monetary equivalent of what we would find down the back of the sofa they now have thousands of British people flocking to message boards making excuses for them.

Did we flood Newcastle message boards to gloat when we thought Dell were taking over - No we didn't.
Would you react differently if the shoe was on the other foot - No you wouldn't.
You are also being sanctimonious so stop preaching.

If there is a Newcastle message board recommended I would happily discuss with them?

Ironically, I first discovered this board via a web search for a Newcastle message board.

The google algorithm does not lie, Newcastle fans land here because you post so much Newcastle content.

The Saudis are national equivalent to pubs illegally streaming games!
As cynical as it seems the premier league will be more bothered about this than any tarnished reputation by their human rights issues.

I will look, thanks.

Thought I'd have a read of their forums to see if the mag view in that article was shared by them generally and came across this

Amnesty International aren't doing anything wrong by pointing out the evils of the SA regime, but they were no use to us when Mike Ashley was screwing us to the wall.
