Nope, those days are gone.

The people that did change were mostly just lads who likes football and would go to both games but then chose the mags due to their success, my dad used to go to both games until he eventually saw the light and chose us ;)

I remember pre 92. The were very few Mags in the likes of Durham let alone Shiney , Penshaw and Washington.
It would be even worse this time with us being in the third division.

I recall the episode of Only Fools and Horses where Del becomes a millionaire. All he’s ever wanted; money, Rolls Royce, big house etc., and he’s emotionally bereft. The thrill was in the chase.

A lot of mags seem to be excited for a return to the Keegan days but, whilst Keegan spent money, that was a more organic building process where they had utter faith in one man, who was an idealist in terms of the way he wanted football played and gained unbelievable momentum. It was a different era.

I am retired, live away now, Dawdon lad, saw Cloughy play, etc, etc.... I am off to the council tip as soon as the lass from Lightwater Valley takes it over - another amusement park.

I'm a Mag mate. I'm just being realistic. Our performances on the pitch this season have been terrible. Our League position does not reflect how bad we are.

Relegation is still a very real possibility if this season i sever played out.

You may be right on performances. I struggle these days to formulate an opinion which can differentiate given that our general level of performance has been awful for 4-5 years now.

What i would say is the table very rarely lies this far into the season.

Nope. Obviously there will be some bairns who may choose Newcastle. That will be from non attending / non supporting families though so probably not lost to Sunderland. More likely LFC / MCFC lose a few quid from shirt sales.
Bear in mind that if this happens the only change in the short term is we may be better prepared to compete with the mid-level teams (say10th-7th) and have a better shout in the Cups.
The idea that we can consistently challenge the top 6, think about top 4, or even having a glimmer of being a genuine danger of winning the league is 10 years away.... at least.

The 92 ‘effect’ was actually 92-96 really. Growing up in county durham it was the kids who liked football but whose dad clearly didn’t that shifted. all the Liverpool or spurs post italia 90 ‘fans’ who used to knock about in their fake tops suddenly said ah yeah well my uncle is a toon fan so really I always supported em and started swanning about in all that ASICS clobber. Actually at least they were from the north east. I went to uni in 96 and what pissed me off was people from Bristol or f***ing Wiltshire wearing the strip and declaring themselves Newcastle fans. No matter what happens I can’t see it being as seismic as those 3 or 4 years. It was perfect timing too. just as football was exploding again. If they’d had that spell in 1982-86 it wouldn’t have registered at all. Now it’s part of sky’s ‘heritage’ and thus it will be relived ad infinitum
