Electric bikes

Anyone have any advice (other than don't bother/get a 'proper' bike) about electric bikes. Thinking about getting one for the wife so we can do a bit more cycling and fitness for her. Have no idea about them other than you can generally get 30-40 miles out if them before recharge.

I've seen some people advertising conversions so would be interested to hear people's thoughts.

Ideally I wouldn't like to be spending more than £6-700. Quite happy to be going for 2nd hand too.

There's a place in Durham who does them. A lad I know swears by them. £700 is a bit optimistic for a decent new one mind

Yeah, just looking online for new and it seems a grand is the approximate starter price. Any website for the one in Durham?
Electric and fitness.
Thanks.

Saw one coming the opposite way when me and the wife out on Sunday...we were both on roadbikes, slightly downhill with a tailwind and this fella was tearing along.
Clearly one of those illegal ones as he was going as quick if not quicker than a moped

looked a good laugh mind

You're very welcome.
See a bloke on an electric bike when I go to work, yet to see him pedal once.

If you cant cycle 30-40 miles without assistance then dont cycle 30-40 miles.

How is having an eletric bike going to help with fitness? Get a proper bike and cycle within your limits. If you put the effort in you might surprise yourself how quickly you can up the miles.

Not a bike but I saw a lad at Seaburn on an electric skateboard but it just had one big wheel in the middle. He was really good and it looked great fun. I would probably fall off and smash my face in so not for me

Maybe they live in a hilly area and just want a pleasant ride out but with a bit of help up the hills??

Ignore the people saying they're no good for exercise, they are, and they allow you to go much further than a standard bike. You still have to pedal and the motor cuts out once you hit 15mph.

I can't help with what model though. Considering they're so expensive I'd be looking to test ride first, so maybe see what stock your local bike shop has in.

Not the ones I've seen.

If the OPs heading out with his Mrs she can keep up and ride further etc.

Horses for courses.....they're ideal for elderly people who want to get out and about or people with respiratory difficulties and other disabilities. You can still get fitter using an ebike by adjusting the settings as accordingly.
Perfect solution that has solved some peoples social mobility needs.

Maybe, kinda doubt it though else they would have said.

Nobody has said that per se. However they will get a far better road bike for the money, and if they keep at it and get fitter (which is one of their goals) I guarantee they would would end up buying a road bike at a later date anyway. I dont understand this idea that unfit people should get an e bike. Buy a standard bike and you have to put the effort in, buy an ebike and they will probably take the easy option when the legs start hurting.

I’ve got an e mountain bike and a normal mountain bike, basically use the ebike if there are no lift ups on the trails, don’t want to waste valuable time pushing a bike up a hill when the fun is going back down at speed. There’ll also not be a soul on here that can go downhill faster than me, unless Danny hart still posts
