Coronavirus compendium thread

Durham Uni not closed. Just moving all lessons to on-line for the last week of term. Staff encouraged to work from home, staff with underlying health issues told to!

Just to clarify before all sorts of bollox appears on SMB.

Still waiting to see what Sunderland Uni's actions are going to be.

Feck all from our uni - 90 second video statement from the VC saying they've cleaned the door handles! I feel soooooo reassured.

AYe, there’ll be a load of debt mounted quickly, I suppose council tax and few other things could be suspended centrally. Banks could be forced to blanket holiday payment all mortgages so there isn’t any f***ing about assessing case by case, council rents knocked on the head, but people still have to pay for food and private rents etc

Would still be messy and massively expensive mind.

Could always universal income every uk citizen a couple of grand a month to tide them over but again massively expensive
Were the 6th richest country in the world.

If despite all that wealth we cant finds a way to ensure in a public health crisis that people can continue to live in their own homes and eat and have access to water and that *especially* the most vulnerable are protected, then truthfully we deserve any fall out we get

The main worry for me is rent (council) and council tax so if what you say is a possibility that does put my mind at rest a bit. I do have credit cards and a loan but as long as i can keep the roof over our heads those things are well down the pecking order.

I've just seen a school memo telling all teachers to have "home schooling packs" ready by the end of this week. i.e. tomorrow.

Could quite easily be local authorities or head teachers trying to get a possible jump on things tbf
😂😂 I guess they are that “High up” that they mustn’t have got the same communications all schools got this morning telling them to prepare home work packs for kids for the the potential closure of 4 weeks+.

So every school in the country got this memo from the department of education? As I've just said it could be quite easily local authorities trying to get a jump on any possible outcome

Sainsbury's last night had all the expected shortages of handwash and bogroll, but I was surprised to see the shelves emptied of tonic water. Is this some kind of Facebook thing that someone has started? Or is everyone just getting pickled for a few weeks till the worst blows over?
I was in the cash and carry this morning and the place had sold out of Syke's pop and also Westler burgers and even Little Chef sauce was being rationed to 6 bottles each, it's madness i have not seen since the Brexit vote. Anyway, we are doing our bit and making sure our customers are sitting on metre away. My new head fryer, Roscoe, has really long arms so he is serving at the moment.

I haven’t heard about us sending any memos out - we’ve set up a helpline. That was the last big update.

Most secondary schools I would guess can supply the kids with learning resources easily enough, and even do video lessons since most kids have laptops or access to them; they do a lot of stuff by email and suchlike already. Primary schools different obviously (but less critical in the scheme of things).

If you’re a council tenant that I’d imagine would be fine as they wouldn’t expect you to stump up straight off and allow you to pay missed rent over a prolonged period I’d imagine. Same with council tax I doubt anyone is being chased forcefully over any missed payments of the country is closed down and again will no doubt be spread over time afterwards or just written off
As for loans and credit card debt to banks again I doubt there’s much appetite for banks to strongarm customers, the bad publicity alone would kill them and I’d expect govt to put some sort of restriction on the thieving fuckers.
The main thing you’d have to think about was food in the short term, every thing else is secondary mate so I wouldn’t overly stress in your situation, and even food although choice may be limited choice there will be stuff on the shelves, but like Epping you’ll have to suffer go beans instead of branston 😉

But even if they had symptoms they could just walk through, people need to understand that.
Other countries are blocking but I guess they are flappers.
Not saying they are flappers but stopping people for what?
The only way to do what you are suggesting is to close the border. Can’t see them doing that.

Haha cheers mate, im not normally a blurt like this but with having bairns and not exactly a monster wage it does get the mind ticking.

Bottom line, *if* (very very big if, I hope) the country goes into lockdown (by which I mean more folk are not working than are, so an incredibly unprecedented situation) if the government gets lost on those little apiealust details rather than implementing the sort of widespread social democratic legislation that is requires just to keep people fed and sheltered, Corona Virus will just be the spark.

Austerity has ruined much of the population below surface level who already live an essential subsistence lifestyle, week by week, month by month. If they dont keep a lid on that then were in an eat the rich scenario honestly.

I think either way we come out of this with the broader working population either slightly more secure, or the stable comfortable status quo much less, because what an epidemic proves is that we are all one society and in times of emergency the strongest cant be safe with all the money in the world if them hoarding that has made a weak link on the chain somewhere else.
its not the british way but who knows what will happen in the right circumstances , the folk who have propped up this system will get no sympathy from me if it does happen
