The myth of the prolific striker being crucial to success...

Liverpool of old were the most successful club in English football history for one reason and one reason only. They nivver signed players who couldn’t score goals no matter what position they played. Kennedy, Smith etc chipped in with EC Final goals from FB. Kenny Sansom was ten times the LB that Kennedy was but couldn’t score to save his life.....so left Palace for Arsenal.
Mind Rush could score.

Of course Kenny Dalglish wasn't to bad for them mind.

Suppose the plus is, if we do manage to go up, sign one or two prolific strikers and we should theoretically do okay /avoid relegation in the championship with the bulk of the current squad.

True.
Other teams had good players cos there was lots about. Liverpool went for players who could score goals, they’d take the 3rd best defender if he scored goals as opposed to the best who nivver scored.

Still, goalscorers.. theirs a reason why they hold records and are remember with fondness, Like Super Kev is for us, but the game is all about pace now, get promoted, we are going to need lots of it.

2018/19 season in League One - James Collins 25 goals, Lyle Taylor 21 goals, Kieffer Moore 17 goals.
What do they all have in common?

They all played in League 1, alongside Henderson (Rochdale, 21 goals), Ladapo (Plymouth, 18 goals), Marquis (Doncaster, 21 goals), Tom Eaves (Gillingham, 21 goals), Ched Evans (Fleetwood, 17 goals)... there were 23 players in League 1 who scored 13+ last season, and only 4 of them got promoted.

At what expense though? Grigg for instance is a 15/20 goal striker, but he wouldnt and cannot do the job needed of the striker in our current system even if he was scoring.

If you put Toney for instance in our side then it would have to be set up for him getting into space and getting in behind rather than often playing with his back to goal, which might result in a pretty one dimensional attack like when we had Darren Bent and he was the only one scoring first season.

at the moment we play a system which the front man should score a few more and he gets the cha ce to but the essential part of his game is working the centre halves, holding the ball and bringing others into play.

unless the striker you get in does that and scores 15/20 a season it then affects team play and hence Gooch and Maguires output and unless you strike lucky at this level you're not gonna get one of those very often.

Certainly not suggesting Charlie Wyke is the answer, its finding players who fit the formula with a bit more quality that's the answer and not just a goalscorer

Aye, obviously you still need to consider the strikers other attributes. Its no good having a system that is based around a lone striker holding the ball up, and then signing a small, fast poacher type. The question was whether you need a goalscorer to be successful, the vast majority of the time you do, regardless of their playing style. For example, Drogba could do the job asked of wyke but got the goals as well.

If we had one we'd be top. Instead, we're fifth.

PP's dreadful start had plenty to do that.

As other poster said, Reidy's side in 1996 didn't score many goals, but could keep a clean sheet. We have also shown we can win games 1-0 recently, all to play for now.

I think Gooch and Maguire will get at least 15 each

I’d agree, unfortunately unless others chip in on a far more frequent basis it won’t be enough.
Wyke has got about 4 goals this season which is piss poor given the amount of chances he’s had. Grigg has been rancid and disinterested, McNulty fat and injured most of the time he was here.

We need Wyke, 09, Power, Dobson/Scowen to contribute more, add in Semenyo when he gets some decent game time.

We also need Gooch and Maguire to each get to around 18-20.

Tall order.

Silly idea. The person who is the most advanced areas need to be trusted to put the ball in the next. The rebound of the post to Wyke and his back pass to the keeper agaisnt Ipswich is the prime example of why wyke isn't good enough.

If we had a Toney, we would be top 2 and go up automatically.

Put a 20+ goals a season striker in that side and we’d comfortably win automatic promotion.

Whether we NEED a prolific goalscorer or not, will be clear in May.
We tried putting a 20 goal striker in the team and he was pathetic.

This 20 goal striker thing, if we had one it would just take away goals from Gooch, Maguire etc. It’s about doing enough to get the 3 points. We seem more set up to that than we have ever been in this league. We are not playing the type of football for a 20 goal striker but our front 3 will get goals.

David Connelly, Marcus Stewart Kevin Phillips, from previous promotion winning sides, just off the top of my head, someone like that.. wow

This Also^
David Connolly scored 13 goals in our title winning season, and was our top scorer. Maguire has 10 already and Gooch has 9, they'll both outscore him this season.

Wyke is unquestionably holding the side back though, no matter how you dress it up. He can't score for toffee, all he's doing is putting a shift in which is appreciated but not enough. If he'd have converted even half his sitters this season we'd be top.

At some point Gooch and Maguire will stop scoring so regularly, as their careers suggest, and we're going to need him to step up. He needs to score more to at least take the pressure off those two digging us out with solo efforts.
