The myth of the prolific striker being crucial to success...

Rotherham: Freddie Ladapo, 10
Peterborough: Toney, 23
Coventry: Godden, 10
Wycombe: Akinfenwa, 8
Sunderland: Maguire, 10
Portsmouth: Curtis, 11
Ipswich: Norwood, 11
Doncaster: Sadlier, 10
Fleetwood: Madden, 15
Oxford: Henry, 9
With the exception of Peterborough (and maybe Fleetwood), none of the top sides possess a prolific goal scorer - most teams have strikers no more prolific than Gooch and Maguire. Throughout the season, people have said we'll need to sign a prolific goal scorer to get promotion. With that in mind, who will join Peterborough and Fleetwood in getting promotion, or, is the idea of 'you need a 20 goal striker' just not true?

True but i think if we had one ww would be even better placed

Put a 20+ goals a season striker in that side and we’d comfortably win automatic promotion.

Whether we NEED a prolific goalscorer or not, will be clear in May.
Peterborough have Toney's goals and aren't 'flying'. They're doing no better than us. They've got Maddison, as well!

I think the fact that no team has run away with it, coupled with the fact that there are only a couple of 'prolific' strikers spread over the teams toward the top, would suggest its not a myth. Put a 15/20 goal striker in our side and we would likely be in the top 2. Same as Portsmouth, Coventry etc.

We went up under peter reid first time around without a 20 goal a season striker. We managed it a lot easier when we had Phillips and quinn!!

There's still over a third if the season left, loads of those you listed could end up with nearly 20 goals , I call that prolific.

It’s hardly a myth. Don’t look at the exceptions, take the majority. Successful teams have goal scorers.
Aguero has 16 and Sterling 11
Salah 14 Mane 11
Vardy 17
Abraham 13
Rashford 14
Look at the Championship. Your Premier League thing is a skewed stat as you've excluded all the players for worse teams who are as prolific e.g. Ings, Jimenez, Pukki etc.

The point is that they don't have anyone who is more prolific than the likes of Maguire and Gooch.
