not sure, I think I may have heard they’re doing work on the street so if shut hopefully only temporarily. Saw nothing of a closure on their Instagram page.
they do a lot of good stuff for the city imo so hopefully it’s ok

There was an old woman running it who sold things like cow heel, honeycomb tripe, cow's uwer (udder), pigs trotters, brawn etc.

Our house in Church Lane was reputed to be over 300 years old as well. You can see from my avatar that the windows were about 8 ft long and our living room was double height with a verandah around two sides. Really strange.

I mentioned Brechners in an earlier post, but I can’t remember if it was the toy shop in Crowtree Road or did it just sell all sorts of stuff ? I never realised when I was a bairn how many shops in the town were owned by Jewish people. Now sadly all gone.

Thanks Marra, I've been racking my brain all afternoon. I had Union Butchers in my head for some reason. Plus do you remember what the shop was called that sold sweets, Glasses of Pop for a penny across the road from St Marys school ?
 
Food weighhouse where you could take your own containers and fill them up with cereal, washing up powder, kets, flour etc

I mentioned Brechners in an earlier post, but I can’t remember if it was the toy shop in Crowtree Road or did it just sell all sorts of stuff ? I never realised when I was a bairn how many shops in the town were owned by Jewish people. Now sadly all gone.

They had two branches originally with the other branch in the run of shops in the high st at the top of crowtree road That run had Strothers the ironmongers, the army and navy shop, the old 29 which had a different name and Pell's auction room at the Hylton road end.
Brechner's sold all sorts, from tools to toilet rolls. It was the original bargain shop selling fairly low quality gear at low prices. Mind low quality back then would be high quality today.

I went to St Mary’s as a kid. I can remember going to the shop loads of times to buy sweets, but I can’t remember the nam, sorry.

There was a toy shop on Crowtree road next door to Brechners or there abouts. I think it was called Berg's or Hodgson's. When Crowtree road was demolished it moved to Blandford street on the corner along from the camera shop. I'm sure that became a bank when the toy shop closed. I haven't a clue what it is today.

I can remember that one as me and my mates would often just stand and stare in the windows at all of the toys on display. As we stood and gawped we would try and be first to say “Bagsie all the toys, except the girls ones”. On the few occasions that I bought something, I seem to remember that the shop was owned by two Jewish brothers.
