Also giving Wagner who hasn't even bowled very well a 5for, very very poor.

Only saw/listened to bits of last night but it’s incredibly poor, some awful awful shots

Good to see Archer score some runs to destroy the myth that he’s a complete rabbit, albeit sounds he looked a bit wafty.

Denly looks to have cemented 3, and at least he looks solid.

Pope played 2 crap shots in the match, needs to learn quick

Most amazing stat of the day is that Santner still doesn’t have a first class (nevermind test) four for

People have continually blamed our bowlers. But the reason we have lost these 4 games is not not scoring 600 in games where that was clearly achievable.

I think both batsmen and bowlers can take some of the blame. Today was a new low. The shots played by Root, Pope, Stokes, Buttler, Archer and to some extent the openers were truly abysmal accepting that Pope, Sibley, Archer can have some degree of leeway. Flat pitch, no Trent Bould, 8 wickets between Wagner and Santner. It doesnt get much worse tbh. Even before today our inability to score big when conditions are easy and inability to get teams out on flat pitches were highlighted clearly.

There will always be a counter argument against any suggestion for next captain. With Burns the question mark is with him just getting established, focussing on his batting etc, just got the opener sorted. With Buttler some think his place isn't established etc, Stokes already having to focus on batting, bowling, fielding etc. I quite like the idea of Burns tbh but can see why loads wont.

That's the argument I would expect and its a fair one. However name a candidate and their will be just as good a reason not to select them. Who would your choice be? I think I would probably persevere with Root just because their is no realistic option and hope that a) He turns it around or b) Burns consolidates his place for a few more tests and then takes over the captaincy.

We are not a good team.

We have the most exciting fast bowling prospect in the world, but he's young and learning. And we have the best all-rounder. We have two aging seamers, amongst the best we've ever had, but have both struggled away from home for a while now.

On the other hand, we are very short in the spin bowling department unless there is very real assistance from the pitch, and our batting is probably the worst it's been in my lifetime. There appears to be no ability on either side of the ball when the pitch is flat - no patience to exploit it with the bat or create pressure with the ball. Our young seamers, other than Archer, look short of test class. Most of all, there is a lack of leadership and the captaincy stinks.

A lot for Silverwood to ponder.

We know the weakness of our bowlers with the kookaburra.

The batsman need to try and tire out the opposition bowlers, like they do to ours when we play away

I mean our bowlers actually started well having them 130/4. But they got tired as the ball got old, unsurprisingly.
